A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE EAST WEBSTER HIGH SCHOOL WOLVERINES FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH RON PRICE ON WINNING THE 2025 MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION (MHSAA) CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, on December 6, 2025, in an incredible game that will surely be remembered for years to come, the East Webster High School Wolverines Football Team clinched its first state title in school history when the team reigned supreme against the Heidelberg High School Oilers with a 28-16 win at Davis Wade Stadium on the campus of Mississippi State University; and
WHEREAS, finishing one of their most successful seasons of all time with a sensational 14-1 record, the Wolverines' victory in the 2025 Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 2A State Championship tied a school record for number of wins in a season, with the state title being the 14th consecutive win after the team rebounded from a first-game-of-the-season loss; and
WHEREAS, the Wolverines, District 4 2A Champions and 2A North Half Champions, racked up an amazing 583 points in the 2025 season, another program record etched in the school's history books during its 40th football season; and
WHEREAS, East Webster, 0-2 in state title attempts, appeared to be outmatched at the onset of the contest as the Oilers, determined to retain their 2024 championship title, drove the ball down the field on its first possession and put eight points on the board after a 14-yard run and two-point conversion before the Wolverines, on its first possession, fumbled the ball away on the 20-yard line; and
WHEREAS, undaunted, with 2:20 left in the first quarter, East Webster came alive when quarterback Kross Avent found receiver Lakendrick Potts on a 42-yard touchdown, ending the quarter with only a one-point deficit; and
WHEREAS, the second quarter proved to be a back and forth nailbiter, as the Wolverines took a 14-8 lead after Avent found Lamarkiz McCurry on a 25-yard pass, but seeming relentless, the Oilers answered with just 3:06 remaining on the clock in the first half, scoring again followed by yet another two-point conversion and securing a 16-14 lead before the halftime buzzer sounded; and
WHEREAS, unstoppable in its quest to bring home the championship trophy, the Wolverines' unbelievable defense, led by Zamarrien Jones who impressively recorded 13 tackles, kept the Oilers off the board in the second half, while the offense scored on the first drive out of halftime on a 56-yard pass when Avent once again found receiver Potts; and
WHEREAS, with just 1:53 remaining on the clock in the final quarter, Avent sealed the championship title for East Webster with a 28-yard touchdown run that extended the Wolverines' lead to 28-16 for the victory; and
WHEREAS, while each and every member of the Wolverines were essential to East Webster's history-making triumph at the championship matchup, receiver Lakendrick Potts, who dominated with 191 yards on seven receptions and two touchdowns, was named the Championship Most Valuable Player; and
WHEREAS, the team's success throughout the season would not have been possible without the endless training and hard work of each of the following talented student-athletes who comprise the 2025 Wolverines team: Bryton Graham, Kross Avent, Campbell Flora, RT Moye, Sproles Stewart, Brody Gerrish, Daygan Crowley, Prentiss Cork, Jertaven Ivy, Jashawn Jones, Lakendrick Potts, Lamarkiz McCurry, Mahd Jones, Jaqualian Johnson, Clark Hampton, Miles Stidham, Cooper Stidham, Cameron Lee, Dylan Carpenter, Dakarai Coffey, Darnell Dantzler, Jordan Gaskin, Damarkus McCurry, Gabe Barial, Clayton Hampton, Quay Coleman, Greyson Davis, Brantley McClendon, Cayson Sanderford, Ryland Gentry, Eian Pogue, Cooper Grimes, Conlyn Butler, Jax Smith, Jovi McMullin, Hayden Graham, Luke Neilson, Kyler Harris, Lawson Reed, Cayden Dailey, John Austin Myers, Lucas Mincy, Jase Sanford, Jaks Walters, Gauge Downing, Briley Misso, Boomer Williams, Ashton McClendon, Dashawn Roberts and Cooper Swindle; team managers Graham Stidham, Case Stidham, Sebo Jones, Jase Shows and Grayson Betts; and videographer Rilyn Mamrack; and
WHEREAS, the players have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Ron Price, assistant coaches Jason Smith, Codie Silver, Matt Snow, Brandon Haynes and Blake Hutchinson, and Chaplain Landon Powell, all of whom have broadened the players' knowledge of the game while refining their skills in execution; and
WHEREAS, throughout this season, the team has been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Ron Price, who along with the assistant coaches, has broadened the players' knowledge of the game while refining their skills in execution; and
WHEREAS, the Wolverines' phenomenal achievement in defeating the Heidelberg Oilers is a testament to the steadfast support of the school district and the entire East Webster community, whose encouragement and unwavering belief in their team continue to inspire both on and off the field; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and honor the achievements of student-athletes such as the East Webster High School Wolverines Football Team, who have brought honor to their families, school and community and the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the East Webster High School Wolverines Football Team and Head Coach Ron Price on winning the 2025 Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 2A State Championship and extend best wishes for continued success in all their future athletic and academic endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Head Coach Ron Price on behalf of the East Webster High School Wolverines Football Team and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
