Senate Resolution 48

A RESOLUTION MOURNING THE PASSING OF RESPECTED SUMMIT POLICE OFFICER TROY FLOYD WHO WAS LOST IN THE LINE OF DUTY AND COMMEMORATING HIS BRAVE SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF LINCOLN COUNTY.

WHEREAS, it is with great sadness that we note the passing of respected Summit Police Officer Troy Floyd who was lost in the line of duty on February 6, 2025; and

WHEREAS, Floyd was a native son of Lincoln County. He graduated from Brookhaven High School in 1991 and lived in the Clear Branch Community; and

WHEREAS, Floyd's family owned The Half Shell. Growing up Floyd was always there working, washing dishes or busing tables. "He was a hard worker and would give the shirt off of his back. He loved his family and his church. He loved every stranger," his friend Donnie Hedgepeth said. "I know I loved him. He was my brother. We spent days, nights and weekends together growing up." After high school, while Hedgepeth joined the military, Floyd joined law enforcement; and

WHEREAS, Troy worked as a jailer, patrol officer and parole agent with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Mississippi Department of Corrections, Wesson and Summit Police Departments. His career in law enforcement spanned an impressive 27 years; and

WHEREAS, Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said Floyd was a great guy who started his career in law enforcement about the time he did. He recalled Floyd riding with him on patrol when Floyd was a reserve officer. "He loved law enforcement and working with people and kids," Sheriff Rushing said. "He worked with our DARE program. He just had a heart for kids and people in general. Working with kids was what he really enjoyed doing. He enjoyed interacting with the community and had a great knack for connecting with kids in that way"; and

WHEREAS, Troy Floyd had great compassion for others especially with his job. He attended Bethel Temple Pentecostal Church. His faith was the driving force in his life as evidenced by numerous stories people shared in reaction to his death. "He loved the Lord more than anything and you knew where he stood," Sheriff Rushing said; and

WHEREAS, we can never repay our debt to Troy Floyd and his family, but we must do what we can, with all that we have, to live our lives in a way that pays tribute to his memory. We should not pause and remember to thank police officers and first responders only in the wake of tragedy. We should do it every day:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby mourn the passing of respected Summit Police Officer Troy Floyd who was lost in the line of duty and commemorate his brave service to the citizens of Lincoln County, and extend our condolences to Officer Floyd's surviving family and friends.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Officer Troy Floyd, forwarded to the Summit Police Chief and Lincoln County Sheriff, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
