House Concurrent Resolution 28

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE GEORGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL REBELS BASEBALL TEAM UPON WINNING THE 2024 MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 6A BASEBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING AND MEMORABLE 2023-2024 SEASON.

     WHEREAS, the George County High School Rebels Baseball Team captured the 2024 Mississippi High School Athletics Association (MHSAA) Class 6A Baseball State Championship, an incredible feat, that was 27 years in the making; and

     WHEREAS, the George County Baseball Team won their first state baseball championship since 1997, and second ever, on Friday, May 24, 2024, at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Mississippi, after defeating Warren Central in back-to-back matchups, prevailing in both games with a final score of 3-2; and 

     WHEREAS, the Rebels, who are aptly described by veteran head coach and renowned alma mater of the George County High School Baseball Team, Brandon Davis, as hard working, having the ability to stick with a plan and being unselfish - all of which contributed to their dynamic season that ended with a storybook season at 30-5; and

     WHEREAS, notably, Coach Davis was on the 1997 Rebels Baseball Team and helped George County High School capture the state championship as he was a senior standout catcher for the team; and

     WHEREAS, as destiny would have it, the Class 6A state championship marked the 400th career win for Coach Davis, and the win was made even more special because he was able to coach his son, Ben Davis, as well as the other fine players to their first state championship; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Davis has brought additional honor to himself and to George County High School by being named the Class 6A  2023-2024 "Coach of the Year" by the MHSAA; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to the well deserved accolades bestowed upon Coach Davis, his son, Ben, was named Class 6A "Player of the Year" and other talented Rebels were named Class 6A All-State, including, Preston McAdory, Tripp Lightsey and Canyon Reeves; and

     WHEREAS, the Rebels have been supported in their athletic endeavors and can attribute much of their success to the administration, staff, many parents, fans and overall supporters whose moral and spiritual encouragement have remained fervent throughout the season; and

     WHEREAS, the Rebels have developed a winning and cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coaches and bring honor to George County High School; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, such as the George County Rebels Baseball Team, who are its future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we commend and congratulate the George County High School Rebels Baseball Team and their coaches for their outstanding 2023-2024 season, for winning the 2024 Mississippi High School Athletics Association Class 6A Baseball State Championship, and for displaying tireless devotion to their athletic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to George County High School, Head Coach Brandon Davis and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
