A RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING SIMPSON COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, UPON THE OCCASION OF ITS BICENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY OBSERVANCE ON JULY 4, 2024.

WHEREAS, founded on January 23, 1824, located in south-central Mississippi and named for Josiah Simpson, a Pennsylvania settler, territorial judge and political figure, who served as a delegate to Mississippi's Constitutional Convention, Simpson County will celebrate its Bicentennial Anniversary on July 4, 2024, acknowledging 200 years of rich and historical excellence; and

WHEREAS, a small county on the northern side of the Piney Woods area, Mendenhall serves as the county seat, and its history grows from other populous communities which include Magee, D'Lo, Braxton, Pinola, Harrisville, Weathersby, Sanatorium and Westville; and

WHEREAS, at the time of its founding, Simpson County was one of the most attractive counties of the great Southwest, and grew rapidly in the first 20 years after its opening for settlement, which had been attributed to positive accounts of agricultural and economic promise relayed home to relatives by the early settlers from Scotland, New England, Virginia and the Carolinas; and

WHEREAS, with crystal clear springs, fertile soil along the rivers' banks and sprawling stands of timber standing in magnificent grandeur for miles on end, Simpson County's land mass spans 589.2 square miles, the 34th largest county in Mississippi

by total area.  Today it is the homestead to approximately 26,000 individuals, an explosive boom from the 1,830 population recorded in the 1830 Federal Census; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we join the citizens of Simpson County in paying tribute to the history and legacy of this area where outstanding quality of life and positive values stand as a model throughout the great State of Mississippi:
