A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING ANGEL JACKSON, UPON A SUCCESSFUL BASKETBALL SEASON AND BEING NAMED THE 2024 SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE'S (SWAC) WOMEN'S DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR.

     WHEREAS, Ms. Angel Jackson continues to reign supreme as she has once again ascended to pinnacle of basketball excellence, upon the distinguished honor of being named the Southwestern Athletic Conference's (SWAC) Women's Defensive Player of the Year for the second time in her collegiate career of play at Jackson State University; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Jackson achieved this truly astonishing feat, after another electric season with the Jackson State University Lady Tigers Basketball Team, which culminated in the Lady Tigers clenching its third SWAC Championship title in three years and its third berth to the NCAA Tournament; and

     WHEREAS, nationally ranked in multiple categories, Ms. Jackson, the reigning Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, finished the season ranked No. 10 in the nation in blocked shots and 13th in blocks after making 26 game appearances, and starting in every single one of those matchups; and

     WHEREAS, with 71 blocked shots on the season, Ms. Jackson led the Tigers and the SWAC with a No. 1 ranking in blocked shots, while finishing ninth in the SWAC in rebounding, leading JSU with a game average of 6.6 rebounds per game, which also positioned her to be tapped for selection to the SWAC Second Team All-Conference; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Jackson averaged 9.5 points per game, which catapulted her season scoring total to 247 points, with an incredible 172 rebounds, as she honed in with an eagle-eye focus of achieving the remarkable feat of a 1,000-career points milestone; and

     WHEREAS, having registered 12 double figure scoring games, five double figure rebounding games this season and four double-doubles, Jackson's grit and tenacity to not only play, but to master both the grueling mental and physical demands of the game allowed her to finish her collegiate career with an awe-inspiring 1,047 points and 723 rebounds; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend extraordinary Mississippi student-athletes, especially those such as Ms. Jackson, whose hard work and dedication brings honor to the sport of women's basketball, Jackson State University, and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Ms. Angel Jackson, upon being named 2024 SWAC's Women's Defensive Player of the Year, and extend best wishes for continued success in all her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Ms. Angel Jackson and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
