Senate Resolution 54

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 2022 JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY "LADY TIGERS" WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM FOR WINNING ITS THIRD CONSECUTIVE SWAC CHAMPIONSHIP AND HEAD COACH TOMEKIA REED BEING NAMED SWAC "COACH OF THE YEAR" AND BOXTOROW "NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR."

     WHEREAS, we join the students, fans and alumni of Jackson State University in recognizing the 2022 "Lady Tigers" Women's Basketball Team and "Coach of the Year" Tomekia Reed for winning their third consecutive SWAC Championship; and

     WHEREAS, the 2022 Women's Basketball Team achieved the following individual honors:

     ·  Won its third straight SWAC Regular Season Championship and second straight SWAC Tournament Championship;

     ·  2022 NCAA Tournament appearance;

     ·  Ameshya Williams-Holliday - First Team All SWAC; SWAC Player of the Year; Defensive Player of the Year; SWAC All-Tournament Team; became first JSU player, second SWAC player and sixth HBCU player selected in WNBA Draft (25th overall to Indiana); first HBCU player drafted since 2002; SWAC Woman of the Year;

     ·  Dayzsha Rogan - Second Team All SWAC; SWAC Tournament MVP;

     ·  Miya Crump - SWAC All-Tournament Team;

     ·  Tomekia Reed - 2022 SWAC "Coach of the Year" and BOXTOROW 2022 "National Coach of the Year";

     ·  Alexis Roberts made Team USA and won Gold Medal in 2022 Deaflympics in Brazil;

     ·  Became first SWAC Women's Team to go 18-0 in League Play; tied school record for wins;

     ·  Won 21 straight games entering NCAA Tournament; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize these student athletes who have brought honor to their team, their university and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the 2022 Jackson State University "Lady Tigers" Women's Basketball Team for winning its third consecutive SWAC Championship and Head Coach Tomekia Reed being named SWAC "Coach of the Year" and BOXTOROW "National Coach of the Year," and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to "Coach of the Year" Tomekia Reed and JSU Acting President Dr. Elayne Hayes-Anthony for the team, forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
