Senate Resolution 27

(As Adopted by Senate)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING BROOKHAVEN HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR CALEB HARRIS FOR SETTING A NEW MHSAA 5A STATE POWERLIFTING RECORD, AND CONGRATULATING RAMERIAZE EDWARDS AND JAVONTA STEWART FOR WINNING THEIR WEIGHT CLASS.

WHEREAS, we join the students, parents, Coach Russ Britt and Brookhaven High School Powerlifting Team members in recognizing Caleb Harris for setting a new state record, and in recognizing Rameriaze Edwards and Javonta Stewart for winning their weight class; and

WHEREAS, before heading to the MHSAA 5A State Powerlifting Meet, Brookhaven High Senior, Caleb Harris, predicted he would break a state record in the deadlift.  Harris had set the 5A South State mark earlier by deadlifting 635 pounds at the 5A South State Meet in Gulfport, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, on April 2, 2022, at the Mississippi Coliseum, Harris realized his prophecy of rewriting the record books; and

WHEREAS, he started off by breaking the 5A State Powerlifting Record with a deadlift of 665 pounds.  Then Harris, lifting in the 308+ weight class, set an all-time record, regardless of weight class or school division, with a 735 pound deadlift; and

WHEREAS, Harris played defensive lineman for the "Panthers" on the football field and has signed to continue his career at East Central Community College; and

WHEREAS, "It was the most impressive thing I've seen in my 10 years of coaching the sport and in my seven years of judging it," said Brookhaven High School Powerlifting Coach Russ Britt.  "A 735 pound deadlift speaks for itself, but I feel bad that I didn't put more on the bar for him"; and

WHEREAS, with a squat total of 615 pounds and bench press of 285 pounds, Caleb Harris finished with a combined total of 1,635 pounds; and

WHEREAS, the following Brookhaven High School powerlifters won first place in their weight class:  Rameriaze Edwards first place in 114 weight class and Javonta Stewart first place in 181 weight class; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize these student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Brookhaven High School Senior, Caleb Harris, for setting a new MHSAA 5A State Powerlifting Record, and Rameriaze Edwards and Javonta Stewart for winning their weight class and extend to Caleb, Rameriaze and Javonta and their families our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Caleb Harris, Rameriaze Edwards, Javonta Stewart and Powerlifting Team Coach Russ Britt, forwarded to Brookhaven Principal Stacy Walker and the Brookhaven School Board and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
