House Resolution 123

A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING THE LAKE HIGH SCHOOL LADY HORNETS BASKETBALL TEAM FOR WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW.

     WHEREAS, the Lake High School Lady Hornets Basketball Team reigned supreme against the Heidelberg High School Lady Oilers, winning its second consecutive Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 2A State Championship, a truly outstanding achievement; and

     WHEREAS, during the championship game, the Lady Hornets' mental stamina and athletic prowess never wavered from the moment they first hustled onto the court until the final buzzer buzzed, as they outlasted, and ultimately outplayed the Lady Oilers in a

67-48 win; and

     WHEREAS, to claim this illustrious victory, the Lady Hornets brought intensity on defense and executed offensively, relying on their swift feet, accurate shooting and strategic moves, which ultimately allowed them to bring the coveted trophy back home to the Lake High School trophy case; and

     WHEREAS, remarkably, in addition to being the MHSAA Class 2A State Champions, the Lady Hornets are also Scott County Champions and District Tournament Champions; and

     WHEREAS, the Lady Hornets team is comprised of the following exceptional student-athletes: T'Lea Hunt, Nakijah Gammage, Kayjah Lay, Alicia Oliphant, Laneisha Palm, Kelis Odom, An'twonette Pinkston, Taylor Clark, Brooklyn Harris, Ja'santoe Pinkston, Anyia Hunt, Lyric Lay, Kaliauna Jones, Alexis Robinson and Kerionia Harris; and  

     WHEREAS, the Lady Hornets have been superbly coached and tremendously inspired by Head Coach Holly Moncrief and Assistant Coach Teka Lofton, who have broadened the players' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Moncrief and Coach Lofton continue to build upon the legacy of superior play and true sportsmanship forged by the tenacious and undaunted spirit of each team member, as evidenced in their ability to produce high caliber players and plays, and by the team's successful 24-9 season; and

     WHEREAS, the Lady Hornets will surely carry the unforgettable memories they made along their way to championship status, whether it be the long hours of grueling practices, as well as the lessons of hard work, dedication and perseverance learned during this amazing season, throughout their lives as they are constantly flooded with the feeling of greatness that accompanies being a champion; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially that displayed by the Lake High School Lady Hornets Basketball Team, and it is with great pride that we congratulate this elite group of student-athletes, who have brought honor to Lake High School and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize and commend the Lake High School Lady Hornets Basketball Team, Head Coach Holly Moncrief, Assistant Coach Teka Lofton and staff, for winning the MHSAA (Mississippi High School Activities Association) Class 2A State Championship for the second year in a row, and extend best wishes for continued success in all their future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Head Coach Holly Moncrief and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
