House Resolution 58

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING CONGRESSMAN JAMES E. CLYBURN FOR HIS  OUTSTANDING SERVICE AS A MEMBER OF THE UNITED STATES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND HIS DEDICATION AS A PUBLIC SERVANT TO THE CITIZENS OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S 6TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT.

     WHEREAS, Congressman James E. Clyburn is and continues to be a dedicated public servant for South Carolina's 6th congressional district; and

     WHEREAS, he has passionately served since 1993 in Congress, and is currently serving in his 16th term; and

     WHEREAS, born in Sumter, South Carolina, to his loving parents Enos and Almeta Clyburn, who raised a young James in South Carolina, where he graduated from Mather Academy, and went on to attend South Carolina State College (now South Carolina State University); and

     WHEREAS, while in college, he was a committed student who  joined the distinguished gentlemen of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and graduated with a bachelor's degree in history; and

     WHEREAS, before entering the political arena, he was a teacher at C.A. Brown High School in Charleston, until he became involved in politics during the 1969 hospital strike; and

     WHEREAS, participation in the strike motivated Mr. Clyburn to become involved in St. Julian Devine's campaign for a seat on the Charleston City Council, and when Devine won, he became the first African American to hold a seat on the city council since Reconstruction; and

     WHEREAS, although his first run for the South Carolina General Assembly was unsuccessful, Mr. Clyburn won the seat for South Carolina's 6th congressional district by 55% of the vote in 1993; and

     WHEREAS, due to hard work and tenacity, Representative Clyburn was unanimously elected as Majority Whip in the 110th Congress; and

     WHEREAS, he was lovingly supported by his wife of 58 years until she passed this life in 2019, and by their three daughters Mignon, Jennifer and Angela, who are all successful in their own right; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor and commend the passionate commitment of public servants, such as Mr. Clyburn, who have sought to enhance the lives of citizens in his state:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Congressman James E. Clyburn for his dedicated and outstanding service as a member of the United States House of Representatives and his dedication as a public servant to the citizens of South Carolina's 6th congressional district.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Congressman James E. Clyburn and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
