House Resolution 33

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE SCOTT CENTRAL "REBELS" FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH JEFF STOCKSTILL FOR WINNING BACK-TO-BACK MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION(MHSAA) CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS.

WHEREAS, whatever the Scott Central High School "Rebels" Football Team left on the field in last season's 72-24 win in the 2021 MHSAA Class 2A State Championship Game, it picked up in this year's title clash with Charleston High School in a decisive 42-12 victory on December 3, 2022, and the Rebels finished a complete effort to back-to-back Class 2A State Championships; and

WHEREAS, the Rebels had a remarkable season that was driven by more than just the yearning to succeed, intensely amplified all of their hard work, motivation and audacity, led by an electric offense during its eight-game regular season winning streak, averaging 41 points per game, while being guided on the field under the passionate perseverance of Senior Austin Goss, who amassed 2,531 passing yards, 509 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns in 13 games; and

WHEREAS, in the Championship game, Scott Central (13-2) wasted no time getting into the end zone with quarterback Quez Goss launching a 50-yard touchdown pass to Antreyvious Edwards on the second play of the game; and

WHEREAS, after allowing a touchdown on the opening drive, Scott Central's defense locked down, and on the Rebels' third possession, Goss unleashed his unbridled talent, finding Javieon Butler for a 73-yard touchdown, complimented by a 31-yard touchdown pass to Edwards on the ensuing drive; and

WHEREAS, Butler and Edwards, both classified Seniors, combined for eight catches, 264 yards and five touchdowns in the first half en route to a 35-6 lead at halftime, with the defensive line veiling the field with an impenetrable steel curtain, which only allowed Charleston to finish its last six first-half drives with a punt; and

WHEREAS, with the latest consecutive state championships for the 2021 and 2022 gridiron seasons, the Rebels now have four State Championships dating back to 2018 and 1999 on display in the school's trophy case; and

WHEREAS, the Scott Central statistics were impressive, and there were outstanding performances by individual players, but the key to this team's consistent success has been the constant team atmosphere and year-round hard work; and

WHEREAS, Head Coach Cody Jeff Stockstill and his  exceptionally talented staff of assistant coaches have superbly coached and inspired the Rebels and broadened their knowledge of the game while refining their skills in execution, and continue to

build upon the legacy of superior play and true sportsmanship forged by the tenacious and undaunted spirit of each team member,

as evidenced in the coaching staff's ability to produce high caliber players and plays and by the team's successful season; and

WHEREAS, the Scott Central High School 2022 Championship Team Roster is:  Tyquan Bounds, Jermiah Hicks, Austin Goss, Kendarious Spivey, Shamon Wash, Javieon Butler, Antreyvious Edwards, Zechariah Parodi, Kobe Bobbitt, Jarvez Ficklin, Jhakyree Slack, Ethan Stockstill, Brandon Ortiz, Chancler Burks, Marquavious Bradford, Bryson Norman, Lakindric Miller, Jakoby Anderson, Tyler Jenkins, Brian Shepard, Kamron Mobbs, Romeo Patrick, Desavion Gray, Kat Stewart, Devin Cunningham, Jamari Thomas, Demetric Mitchell, Jeremy Nealy, Martavious Reed, Kaden Terry, Ahmarion Ragsdale, Lataveone Evans, Parker Mcgee, Nate Hardy, Tayshawn Shepard, Ketavion Washington, Jeremiah Lyles, Dylan Sumrall, Braylon Kincaid, Kayden Burks, Frayshun Darby, Tywuan Mcclendon, Steven Bradford and Kyon Bounds; Head Coach Jeff Stockstill and Assistant Coach Johnathon Brasfield; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and honor the achievements of student-athletes such as the Scott Central High School "Rebels" Football Team, who have brought honor to their school, the Scott County community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Scott Central School "Rebels" Football Team and Head Coach Cody Stogner for winning the 2022 Mississippi High School Activities Association 2A State Football Championship, the team's second consecutive state championship title, and extend best wishes for continued success in all of their future academic and athletic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Coach Jeff Stockstill, Scott Central Principal Clay Thrash, the Scott County Board of Education and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
