A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING MISSISSIPPI STATE PAROLE BOARD MEMBER BETTY LOU JONES OF MERIDIAN, MISSISSIPPI, ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT AFTER MANY YEARS OF EFFECTIVE GOVERNMENT SERVICE.

     WHEREAS, Mississippi State Parole Board member Betty Lou Jones is retiring from an outstanding and effective career in public service, effective March 10, 2022; and

     WHEREAS, Betty Lou Jones was appointed to the Parole Board in 2008 by Governor Haley Barbour and was reappointed to the Parole Board in 2012 by Governor Phil Bryant and served both terms under Governor Bryant.  Ms. Jones was reappointed to the Parole Board in the 2020 by Governor Tate Reeves and serve until she retired March 10, 2022; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Jones traveled back and forth from Meridian to Jackson to serve the citizens of Mississippi.  Ms. Jones believed in second chances but also believed in the system; and

     WHEREAS, as an active member in both her local community and the state, Ms. Jones was passionate about her work as a member of the Mississippi State Parole Board; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Jones worked tirelessly to serve victims and advocates of the offender.  Her day did not end when she left the office.  She assisted in getting employment for the offenders, sometimes even giving them a ride to work.  Ms. Jones made many sacrifices in order to assist the offenders to become productive citizens in society; and

     WHEREAS, Betty Lou Jones' legacy is a strong Mississippi prison system and for this and for her selfless public service, a grateful state thanks her:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Mississippi State Parole Board member Betty Lou Jones of Meridian, Mississippi, on the occasion of her retirement after many years of effective government service and extend to Betty Lou Jones and her family our best wishes for future success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Betty Lou Jones and her family, forwarded to the State Parole Board and the Commissioner of Corrections, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
