A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING COAHOMA COMMUNITY COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH STEPHANIE MURPHY UPON BEING NAMED THE MISSISSIPPI ASSOCIATION OF COMMUNITY COLLEGES CONFERENCE (MACCC) "COACH OF THE YEAR."
WHEREAS, we join the Mississippi community college basketball players, coaches and fans in honoring Coahoma Community College (CCC) Women's Basketball Coach Stephanie Murphy upon her receipt of the prestigious Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference "Coach of the Year" Award; and
WHEREAS, Stephanie Murphy is entering her fourth season as CCC Women's Head Basketball Coach. She is coming off an extremely successful 2020-2021 season, leading the Lady Tigers to become MACCC Co-State Champions, North Division Winners, and MACJC Region 23 Runners-Up. Murphy coached her team to pull off consecutive wins for the season, resulting in a 14-game winning streak; and
WHEREAS, Coach Murphy came to Coahoma Community College from Brandon High School, where she spent the past seven years. Prior to Brandon, she spent five years as the Head Coach at Tupelo High School and two years as the Head Coach at Meridian High School, leading all three schools to the State Tournament and to Super Ten rankings. Coach Murphy experienced great success at the high school level, comprising an overall record of 326-124 (.724). She reached the State Tournament five times, finishing as a three-time State Runner-Up. She has also won six district championships, a South State Championship, and was named Daily Journals "Coach of the Year" in 2007; and
WHEREAS, Coach Murphy spent her collegiate career at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science in the year 2000 and her Master's Degree in Higher Education, with an emphasis in student personnel in 2002. At Ole Miss, she was a Letter Winner, Arthur Ashe, Jr., Leadership Award recipient, NCAA Leadership Conference participant, and an SEC All-Academic Team Member; and
WHEREAS, the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC), formerly the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC), represents the collective interests of Mississippi's 15 public two-year colleges. This association was chartered, in part, to provide a framework for the development and administration of policies and procedures related to the governance of student activities at the various institutions. It is the belief of the MACCC membership that a well-rounded program of student activities greatly enhances the total development of the individual student and promotes the fulfillment of the purpose of the various institutions. The benefits of such activities prepare students through the development of discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, fair play and other virtues essential to success in life. The association supports the wholesome benefits of inter-school competition in athletics and other student activities. Through this shared vision of the institutional and collective benefits of a progressive program of student activities, the MACCC seeks to offer competitive programs that are established and maintained based on a high standard of ethics and fair play; and
WHEREAS, before furthering her education at Ole Miss, Murphy excelled both academically and athletically at West Tallahatchie High School in Webb, Mississippi. She was the Salutatorian of her 1996 graduating class and was selected as the school's Star Student. During her senior year, she was selected a preseason Dandy Dozen, an All-District and First-Team All-State member, and was chosen to play in the Mississippi versus Alabama game; and
WHEREAS, Coach Murphy plans to bring a winning culture and mindset to the women's basketball program by subscribing to the principles that she feels has allowed her to have success throughout her life: discipline, hard work, trust in God, and faith that He will continue to work all things together for her good; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize an outstanding college coach who has brought honor to her program, her community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Coahoma Community College Women's Basketball Coach Stephanie Murphy upon being named the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference "Coach of the Year," and extend to Coach Murphy and her family our best wishes for future success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Stephanie Murphy and Coahoma Community College President Valmedge T. Towner, forwarded to the Board of Trustees of the Coahoma Community College District, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
