Senate Concurrent Resolution 575

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE CLINTON HIGH SCHOOL "ARROWS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH LEONARD TAYLOR FOR WINNING BACK-TO-BACK MHSAA CLASS 6A STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS.

WHEREAS, Clinton High School "Arrows" Boys Basketball Coach Leonard Taylor was calm with Jaylon Davis at the free-throw line.  Less than 10 seconds remained in the fourth quarter of the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 6A Championship Game and Clinton trailed Olive Branch by one; and

WHEREAS, Senior Jaylon Davis knocked both down and gave the Arrows their first lead of the game.  Clinton (23-5) held on to win 76-75 over Olive Branch (28-5) on March 5, 2022, at the Mississippi Coliseum and secured back-to-back MHSAA Class 6A State Championships; and

WHEREAS, Clinton winning its third State Title in program history looked improbable early, when the Olive Branch Conquistadors jumped out to a 21-8 lead in the first quarter and extended their lead to 17 points with 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter.  Clinton would need another comeback, after erasing a double-digit second-half lead against Brandon in the Semifinals, for the victory; and

WHEREAS, Kimani Hamilton helped lead the charge.  The senior had a game-high 24 points, nine rebounds and two blocks.  Hughes finished with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists.  Hamilton scored six of his points in the final three minutes.  The three-star forward had back-to-back drives into the lane to cut the Olive Branch lead to one point.  With 30.4 seconds remaining, Hamilton's finish through contact gave Clinton new life, and Davis finished it off at the free-throw line.  Davis finished with 12 points and six rebounds, including a layup to extend a 19-10 start to the fourth quarter for Clinton; and

WHEREAS, Clinton was ranked No. 2 in the Clarion Ledger "Super 10" Final High School Boys Basketball Rankings; and

WHEREAS, "I'm so proud of them," Coach Taylor said.  "They know how to fight.  We try to tell them there's no 13-point basket.  One play at a time.  Get a basket after a basket and get a defensive stop.  We'll get right back where we need to be"; and

WHEREAS, the 2021-2022 Clinton High School "Arrows" Boys Basketball Team Championship Roster is:  Ashten Michael-Neal, Allen Hughes, Kimani Hamilton, Brandon Taylor, Will Johnson, Tyler Nichols, Jaylon Davis, Kari Hamilton, Artavis Davis, Micah Martin, Mark Hunter, Daelin Harper, Kameron Wilkes and Christian Washington; Head Coaches Robert Green and Thomas Tunberg; Assistant Coaches Leonard Taylor, Michael Bagley and Jay Case; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Clinton High School "Arrows" Boys Basketball Team and Coach Leonard Taylor for winning back-to-back MHSAA Class 6A State Championships, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Leonard Taylor for the team and Clinton Principal Brett Robinson, forwarded to the Clinton School Board, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
