A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE PUBLIC SERVICE OF LONGTIME HINDS COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE AND FORMER STATE REPRESENTATIVE TOMIE T. GREEN ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT.

     WHEREAS, we join the citizens of Hinds County and the legal profession in recognizing the public service of Senior Hinds County Circuit Court Judge and former Mississippi State Representative Tomie T. Green of Jackson, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, after 24 years on the bench and 35 years of public service, Senior Hinds Circuit Court Judge Tomie T. Green of Jackson announced that she will not seek reelection in November, and will retire in December 2022; and

     WHEREAS, Judge Green is the longest-serving Circuit Judge, and she was the first African American and the first woman to have the leadership role of Senior Circuit Judge in the Seventh Circuit Court District.  She also was the first woman elected to the bench in the Seventh Circuit; and

     WHEREAS, Judge Green took office on January 4, 1999, and was unopposed for reelection for five terms; and

     WHEREAS, Judge Green, 69, has worked in all three branches of government.  In the executive branch, she was an Assistant District Attorney in Hinds and Yazoo Counties.  In the legislative branch, she served two terms in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1993-2000, and was particularly involved in legislation relating to child support enforcement; and

     WHEREAS, Judge Green was born on September 29, 1952, in Learned, Mississippi.  She attended Tougaloo College, Jackson State University and Mississippi College School of Law.  Her affiliations include:  Phi Alpha Delta; Zeta Phi Beta; 100 Black Women; NAACP; SCLC; NBSCL; NCSL; Magnolia, Mississippi, Federal, Hinds County National and American Bar Associations; Mississippi Trial Lawyers; and ATLA.  Her late husband was Cornelius Green, Jr.; and

     WHEREAS, "I've been the first in a number of positions, but my purpose has always been to be a bridge builder for those who would follow," Judge Green said in a news release from the state court system.  "I pray that I have accomplished my task.  I've never had any enemies to punish, nor any friends to reward.  Justice has been my only obligation"; and

     WHEREAS, Judge Green has served as a leader and mentor.  She consistently lectured on professional standards of the practice, including ethics, integrity, civility, courtesy and adherence to the Golden Rule.  Her service has honored the legal profession and the Great State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize the public service of longtime Hinds County Circuit Court Judge and former State Representative Tomie T. Green on the occasion of her retirement, and extend to her and her family our best wishes for future success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Judge Tomie T. Green, forwarded to the Seventh Circuit Court District, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
