House Bill 1739

AN ACT TO RESTORE THE RIGHT OF SUFFRAGE TO JO KENDRICK CALHOUN OF TALLAHATCHIE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  The right of suffrage is hereby fully and completely restored to Jo Kendrick Calhoun of Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, who was disqualified as an elector as a result of his conviction for two (2) counts of robbery, on July 27, 2000, in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, for which he was sentenced to serve five (5) years for one (1) count and seven (7) consecutive years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.  He was released on shock probation on February 16, 2001, but sentenced on April 14, 2003, for the crime of conspiracy to commit two (2) counts of robbery for which he was sentenced to twelve (12) years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

     On February 18, 2016, in Tallahatchie County, he was sentenced for the crimes of aggravated assault and possession/receive/obtain stolen firearm and possession of a weapon for which he was sentenced to eight (8) years of post release supervision with five (5) years of reporting and three (3) years of nonreporting.

     He completed all terms and conditions of his sentence and was discharged on September 2, 2018.  The Legislature is informed that he has since conducted himself as a law-abiding and honorable citizen in a good and lawful manner.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
