Senate Concurrent Resolution 519

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 2019 WEST POINT HIGH SCHOOL "GREEN WAVE" FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH CHRIS CHAMBLESS FOR WINNING THEIR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

WHEREAS, West Point High School (15-1) was already one of the elite programs in the state before the end of the 2019 season.  After its 38-26 win over Picayune High School in the 5A State Title Game on December 7, 2019, it joined a prestigious class.  The Green Wave picked up their 11th State Championship and fourth straight with the win.  Only West Point High School and South Panola High School have eleven (11) titles to their name.  Only Bassfield High School, South Panola High School and West Point High School have won four titles in a row; and

WHEREAS, West Point High School fans and players held up the number four with both hands at the 5A State Championship Game at M.M. Roberts Stadium on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi.  Although it was the fourth quarter, the gesture held a different meaning for these players and their fan base.  West Point entered the 2019 season with 10 State Championships but had never won four in a row.  After a final pass by Picayune's Isaac Hickman fell incomplete on fourth and seven at the West Point ten with seventy-one (71) seconds left in the game, the dream finally became a reality.  West Point running back Dantariyus Cannon said.  He finished the game with 128 rushing yards.  Brandon Harris, the game's Most Valuable Player, rushed for 51 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 109 yards and a touchdown; and WHEREAS, their four-peat did not come easy, West Point's

12-point win over the Maroon Tide (14-1) was the closest margin of victory in their last six championship games.  Unlike some of their predecessors, they were overlooked because the team wasn't stocked with Division I talent.  But there was enough talent to put up thirty-eight (38) points against a team that was allowing fourteen (14) points a game; and

WHEREAS, the 2019 West Point High School "Green Wave" State Championship Football Team Roster is:  Jordan Rupert, Brandon Harris, Jimothy Mays, Jayden Floyd, Jacoby McQuiller, Obryan Brandy, Tyron Orr, Chris Ivy, Cameron Young, Joqwan Young, Keon Cunningham, Dantariyus Cannon, Trey Ryland, Gray Berry, Antonio Facella, Corbin Kelley, Shawn Melton, Timothy Melton, Jacarius Harper, Ladorien Cox, Jakobe Pate, Kelviontae Gibbs, Timothy Mays, Jamarquez Petty, Frederick McMillian, Dahmarion Williams, Montaivious Edwards, Macorte Hoskins, Kristian Bennett, Dartavius Moseley, Jay Quinn, Christopher Chandler, Denarrion Tallie, Jaquarius Thomas, Omar Starks, Jaylin Rush, Vashawn Ross, Thomas Robinson, Xavier Moody, Traevon Banks, T.J. Anderson, Cameron Johnson, Bryson Thomas, Robert Spearmon, Miller Conn, Jaekwon Bradshaw, Lajaylon Sykes, Iverion Cungious, Frank Bean, Justin Collins, Jalen Brown, Dontavius Myers, Xavier Collins, Manuel Gracia, Jaquavis Young, Chad Brooks, Maleek McKie, Tyjai Matthews, Jonquez Roby, Jamarr Davis, Shelton Binder, Jalen Lairy, Joshua Lairy, Colin Ferguson, and Wesley Blanchard; and Head Coach Chris Chambless.  Assistant Coaches: Brett Morgan, Casey Welch, Jerry Fremin, Andrew Hardy, Anthony Watt, Matt Snow, Roger Burton, Mark Hysaw and Quon Brand; and Justin Vollenweider - Video Coordinator; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of championship student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the 2019 West Point High School "Green Wave" Football Team and Head Coach Chris Chambliss for winning their fourth consecutive Class 5A State Championship, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Chambless for the team, forwarded to West Point High School Principal Ken Pickens and the Clay County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
