A RESOLUTION COMMENDING MRS. PEGGY HOBSON CALHOUN UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT AS SUPERVISOR OF DISTRICT 3 OF HINDS COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Peggy Hobson Calhoun, the exceptional, well-respected and pioneering Supervisor of District 3 of Hinds County, Mississippi, has retired after 27 years of outstanding and dedicated service to the citizens of Hinds County; and

     WHEREAS, Supervisor Calhoun, a native of Noxapater, Mississippi, and the daughter of her loving parents, Mr. and Mrs. Quincy Culberson, Sr., was reared in Jackson, Mississippi, where she graduated from Jim Hill High School and then earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Jackson State University; and

     WHEREAS, Supervisor Calhoun's public service to Hinds County began in 1992, after defeating the Democratic incumbent in the primary election and defeating the Republican opponent in the general election, which were outstanding feats that made her a pioneer in the political arena, as she is the first female elected to the Hinds County Board of Supervisors and the first African-American female to serve, in 2017, as president of the Mississippi Association of Supervisors and she served as 2019 president of the Hinds County Board of Supervisors until her retirement; and

     WHEREAS, throughout her seven terms of service to District 3 and the county as a whole, Supervisor Calhoun has a plethora of accomplishments, a few of which include:  helped to create more than 1,689 new jobs in addition to the 14,710 existing jobs since 1992, which has had an overall economic impact of $430 million; championing the construction of the Hinds Parkway; allocated more than $1.5 million for the purchase of weather-alert sirens; developed the Storm Water Management Program; responsible for a $600,000.00 community center and a $22,000.00 walking track in Southwest Jackson and the resurfacing of walking tracks for Provine, Wingfield, Forest Hill and Timberlawn School and in the Westside, Sykes, Jayne Avenue and Flowers Drive communities; securing a comprehensive One-Stop Work Force Center; investing over $5 million in street resurfacing and $1 million to help remove blighted properties in her district as well as investing $750,000.00 for communities in her district to help with flooding and drainage problems; and

     WHEREAS, throughout her endeavors, Supervisor Calhoun, a member of several organizations and Mt. Nebo M.B. Church, has been lovingly supported by her husband, Credell Calhoun, a longtime member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, and their children, Paul and Lisa, and grandchildren, Christian and Lauren; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend outstanding Mississippians, especially those such as Supervisor Calhoun, whose leadership and selfless service brings honor to Hinds County and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mrs. Peggy Hobson Calhoun upon her retirement as District 3 Supervisor of Hinds County, Mississippi, and wish her much success in all of her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Peggy Hobson Calhoun and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
