A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING DR. EARLEXIA M. NORWOOD AS CURRENT JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY NATIONAL ALUMNI PRESIDENT AND FOR HER MANY PROFESSIONAL HONORS AS A BOARD-CERTIFIED FAMILY MEDICINE PHYSICIAN.

     WHEREAS, Earlexia M. Norwood, MD, is a native of Jackson, Mississippi, and is the first Jackson State University National Alumni President in many years.  Dr. Norwood has been honored by her colleagues in the family medicine profession; and

     WHEREAS, "Find solutions, not excuses" is the mantra of Dr. Earlexia M. Norwood.  Dr. Norwood is a Board-Certified Family Medicine Physician, who has practiced at Henry Ford Health System (HFHS) since 1993.  She seeks partnerships and alliances to make Detroit the healthiest city in the country, as well as opportunities to educate communities and organizations on health and wellness.  She is currently the Service Chief of Family Medicine for Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, Director of Practice Development and Community Health Education, Ambassador for Healthcare Equity, and Global Health Ambassador for the Breaking Walls Organization; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Norwood is an Assistant Clinical Professor for Wayne State University School of Medicine, and serves on the Multicultural Leadership Committee for the American Heart Association.  Her passion is to transform communities and diverse populations to optimal health, through health education, strategic planning, implementation of best practices, and collaborative partnerships.  She has been featured as a medical expert on multiple television networks, radio programs, and printed publications.  Dr. Norwood was also elected as the Inaugural President of the Organization of Physicians, Academicians, and Executive Leaders (OPAL), a Henry Ford Health System Employee Resource Group (ERG); and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Norwood has been honored annually since 2008 by physicians across southeastern Michigan as one of Detroit's "Top Docs," as noted in Hour Magazine.  She has earned many recognitions throughout her career, including:

     ·  Detroit's Who's Who;

     ·  Who's Who of Health Care Professionals;

     ·  Who's Who of Women in America;

     ·  Distinguished Alumni by the National Association for Equal Opportunity's National Leadership Summit;

     ·  Robert E. Birk Award for "Excellence in Research";

     ·  Featured physician on Health System's "Minds of Medicine" Television Program;

     •  Michigan Chronicle's "Women of Excellence 2016";

     •  Henry Ford Health System's "Quality/Growth Award 2015";

     •  Henry Ford Health System's "Diversity Hero Award 2017"; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Norwood is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), American Medical Association (AMA); National Medical Association (NMA) and Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS).  She has served as a member of the NMA House of Delegates, the NMA Council on Medical Legislation, and as a member of the American College of Executive Physicians (ACEP); and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Norwood is an International Presenter for conferences, community events, businesses, churches and national organizations.  She believes that knowledge is empowering, and uses her speaking platform to influence healthy behaviors.  Most of all, she is a wife, mother of two, and a committed voice to making our state the healthiest in the country, while making a difference in the lives of many, and it is with great pride that we pay tribute to a native Mississippian who has brought honor to her state and whose civic energy is a matter of record:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize Dr. Earlexia M. Norwood as current Jackson State University National Alumni President and for her many professional honors as a Board-Certified Family Medicine Physician, and extend to Dr. Norwood and her family our best wishes for future success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Dr. Norwood and her family, forwarded to the Jackson State University Alumni Association, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
