A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND HONORING LONGTIME COAHOMA COUNTY ELECTION COMMISSIONER HERMAN FURNISS UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AFTER 50 YEARS OF DEDICATED AND EFFECTIVE SERVICE.
WHEREAS, we join the Board of Supervisors of Coahoma County in honoring the service of longtime Coahoma County Election Commissioner Herman Furniss, 86, of Rena Lara, Mississippi, upon the occasion of his retirement. Commissioner Furniss is the brother of longtime Mississippi Representative and State Senator Delma Furniss, also of Rena Lara; and
WHEREAS, Herman Furniss had been on the Coahoma County Election Commission since it first started. His first term began in 1969, and he has been on the Commission for 50 years. Due to medical issues, Furniss submitted his letter of resignation that dated back to June 30. "I am grateful for having had the opportunity to serve on the board of this fine organization for the past 50 years, and I offer my best wishes for its continued success," Furniss said in his retirement letter. Circuit Clerk Demetria Jackson read the letter, which the supervisors unanimously accepted; and
WHEREAS, Furniss represented District 5 and served as the Chair for several years. The term Furniss was elected to expires in 2020, and whoever is elected in November will finish the term. Other members of the Election Commission are Alma Brown, Andrew Thompson, Roosevelt Noah and JoAnn Gates; and
WHEREAS, we pay tribute and cherish fondly the service and association of this most public-spirited citizen of Mississippi whose civic energy is his legacy to the citizens of Coahoma County and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and commend longtime Coahoma County Election Commissioner Herman Furniss of Rena Lara, Mississippi, on the occasion of his retirement after 50 years of dedicated and effective service.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Mr. Herman Furniss, forwarded to the Board of Supervisors of Coahoma County, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
