Senate Concurrent Resolution 513

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE SCOTT CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL "REBELS" FOOTBALL TEAM AND COACH DEVIN COOPER FOR WINNING THEIR FIRST MHSAA CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN 19 YEARS.

WHEREAS, the Scott Central High School "Rebels" Football Team dominated the Taylorsville High School "Tartars" in a 21-7 Class 2A State Title Game at M.M. Roberts Stadium on December 1, 2018, to capture the school's first State Championship in 19 years; and

WHEREAS, the Rebels (15-1) held Taylorsville (15-1), a team that had averaged 431 yards and 35.3 points a game in 15 straight wins, to 142 yards of total offense and seven points; and

WHEREAS, it started so promising for Taylorsville:  a 58-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage to give the Tartars the early 7-0 lead; however, it was all downhill from there; and

WHEREAS, Scott Central deserved plenty of credit.  Coach Devin Cooper was determined to make Taylorsville beat them, and his Rebels sold out to stop the run.  They held the Tartars to minus-four yards on eight first-half carries.  They drove the field on all three of their scoring drives, scoring twice on one yard direct-snaps to six-foot-one, 274 pounds backup Quarterback Hydee Barlow and once on an eight-yard scramble from starter Treyon Wash.  Making it tougher for Taylorsville was the ease with which Scott Central controlled the clock and moved the ball.  The Rebels racked up 403 yards of total offense and held the ball for 35:32 to Taylorville's 12:28; and

WHEREAS, it was a fitting end to a storybook season for Scott Central.  After opening the season with a nine-game winning streak, the Rebel's suffered a 21-19 loss to Pelahatchie.  They used that for motivation, bounced back with a 31-18 win over Philadelphia and rolled through their post-season opponents.  As they raised the 2A Championship Trophy, Coach Cooper could only smile as he watched them.  "There's not a more deserving group than these guys standing behind me"; and

WHEREAS, the 2018 Scott Central High School "Rebels" Football Team Championship Roster is:  Henry Butler, WR, DB; Dillon Shaw, WR, CB; Hydee Barlow, DE, RB, MLB; Treyon Wash, OB, DB; Jabrelynn Vivians, RB, NG, DE; Lajavis Patrick, RB, OLB, SB; Navoneteque Strong, RB, MLB; Vontae McDonald, RB, OLB; Patrick Sessums, SB, CB; Elijah Robinson, RB; OLB; Jeremiah Ousley, CB, WR; Javarious McBeath, WR, OLB; Zy Wash, WR, DB, RB; Darion Bobbitt, WR, OLB; Kadevyan Cager, QB, MLB; Jackie Donald, QB, OLB; D'Arius Bender, WR; Trevon Chambers, WR, DB; Kadarrius Johnson, CB, WR; Zechariah Parodi, RB, MLB; Michael Patrick, MLB; Da'Shun Bounds, WR, DB; Jalen Wells, RB; Zaharrie Kincaid, WR; Dee Burks, WR, FS; Martavious Odom, MLB, RB; Devin Burks, WR; Donnovan Phillips, SB, WR, DB; Jody Matheny, WR, OLB; Keshun Hutchinson, WR, DB; Omarion Jackson, RB, OLB; Quenell Archer, WR; D.J.      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Scott Central High School "Rebels" Football Team and Coach Devin Cooper for winning their first MHSAA Class 2A State Championship in 19 years, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future success.
