House Resolution 86

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING SEVERAL OUTSTANDING STUDENTS FROM MADISON CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL UPON WINNING C-SPAN'S ANNUAL NATION-WIDE STUDENTCAM COMPETITION.

     WHEREAS, renowned cable network C-SPAN awarded a number of impressive Madison Central High School students with prizes from its annual nation-wide StudentCam competition; and

     WHEREAS, Tanbir Banipal, Elizabeth Barton, Vedanth Buddala, Olivia Essary, Luke North, Jillian Russell and Annie Thomas have brought great honor and national attention to their school as winners of this national competition; and

     WHEREAS, to celebrate these students, the C-SPAN's Bus will visit Madison Central High School on March 25th to congratulate these students upon their accomplishments; and

     WHEREAS, this competition encourages students in Grades 6-12 to think critically about issues that affect their communities and nation, and to create a 5-7 minute video documentary related to  themes chosen by C-SPAN; and

     WHEREAS, the 2018 documentary theme was "The Constitution and You:  Choose a provision of the United States Constitution and create a video illustrating why it's important to you."; and

     WHEREAS, a record number of 2,985 videos were submitted from over 5,700 students in 46 states, and a grand total of $100,000.00 in prize money was awarded to 150 students and 53 teachers across the nation; and

     WHEREAS, three teams of 11th grade students from Madison Central High School were awarded prizes:  Jillian Russell and Luke North for their topic on "Civil Rights," Elizabeth Barton, Vedanth Buddala and Tanbir Banipal for their topic on "Freedom of Speech," and Annie Thomas and Olivia Essary for their topic on "America's Two-Party System"; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to celebrate the accomplishments of some of our best and brightest Mississippi students, who strive to reach their greatest potential and are our future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate these impressive Madison High School students upon winning C-SPAN's nationwide StudentCam competition.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Tanbir Banipal, Elizabeth Barton, Vedanth Buddala, Olivia Essary, Luke North, Jillian Russell and Annie Thomas, Madison Central High School and to the members the Capitol Press Corps.
