Senate Concurrent Resolution 614

(As Adopted by Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE BRANDON HIGH SCHOOL "LADY BULLDOGS" SOCCER TEAM AND COACH JEREMY SHORTT FOR DEFEATING THE NUMBER 1 TEAM TO WIN THE MHSAA CLASS 6A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, the Brandon High School "Lady Bulldogs" Soccer Team defeated Number 1 Northwest Rankin 1-0 on February 17, 2018, to win the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Girls Class 6A Soccer Championship; and

WHEREAS, just 17 minutes into the 6A Girls State Soccer Championship, Brandon winger Jocelyn Jones soared past defenders and into the open field.  She fired the ball through the goalkeeper's hands and into the net.  Brandon went up and Northwest Rankin never came back.  The 1-0 victory was the Bulldogs' first State Championship in six years and their second in program history; and

WHEREAS, this Championship has been years in the making for the Bulldogs.  When Coach Jeremy Shortt first arrived in 2015, he led the team to a 22-1 record.  Their lone loss came to Madison Central in the State Championship.  This year, with this team, he knew they had the talent and all of the intangibles.  The Bulldogs lost a core group of seniors from the 2016-2017 squad, but Shortt said that losing that talent and experience made them work even harder; and

WHEREAS, the Brandon High School Lady Bulldog Championship Soccer Team Roster is:  Lauren McLamore, Mallorie Ellis, Olivia McCarthy, Zoe Ellis, Kennedy Jordan, Sadie Stocks, Taylor Glascoe, Stella Vinson, Breanna Cooper, Callie Minshew, Collins Warren, Abby Cannon, Halleigh Steed, Carlie Giles, Bella Volz, Brooklyn Moudy, Caroline Hayman, Bailey Raphelt, Julia Leach, Hannah Pitts, Savannah Robbins, Tori Harvey, Katie Hansen, Jordan Sullivan, Jocelyn Jones, Emily Easterling, Mackenzie Parker, Amelia Fox, Michaela Comans, Kara Beth Carter, Abbey Roberts, Erin Monsour, Conerly Tigrett, Kovani Bolton, Connerly Tigrett, Hanah Bynum, Caroline Griffith and Mallory Koegel; and Coach Jeremy Shortt; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Brandon High School "Lady Bulldogs" Soccer Team and Coach Jeremy Shortt for defeating the Number 1 Team to win the MHSAA Class 6A State Championship, and extend the best wishes of the Legislature to the players, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Shortt for the team, forwarded to Brandon High School Principal Charles Frazier and the Rankin County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
