A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING JACKSON PUBLIC SCHOOLS CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTER STUDENTS GERALD ALDRIDGE, ZION BLOUNT AND D'ANTHONY THOMPSON, AND THEIR INSTRUCTOR MISS MYESHA WALLACE, UPON WINNING THE 2017 CONGRESSIONAL APP CHALLENGE.

     WHEREAS, Jackson Public Schools' students enrolled in the Simulation and Animation Design Technology Program at the Career Development Center have created a national award-winning app, winning the 2017 Congressional App Challenge; and

     WHEREAS, the students, all members of the Technology Student Association, are Gerald Aldridge of Jim Hill High School, Zion Blount of Murrah High School and D'Anthony Thompson of Callaway High School, and they are led by the instructor for Simulation and Animation Design Technology, Miss Myesha Wallace; and

     WHEREAS, Miss Wallace, a graduate of Callaway High School who received her bachelor of fine arts in computer arts from Savannah College of Art and Design, is a member of the state curriculum writing team for Simulation and Animation Design Technology and was the 2016-2017 instructor for the Verizon App Challenge winners for the State of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, this team of students were among over 4,100 students across the nation who signed up to participate in the 2017 Congressional App Challenge which serves to encourage students to learn how to code applications through annual competitions hosted by their members of Congress; and

     WHEREAS, the winning app developed by the students at the Career Development Center is called STEM Adventures, and it is an interactive comic activity book designed to teach third- through fifth-grade students about science, technology, engineering and mathematics occupations; and

     WHEREAS, these winners from Jackson, Mississippi, have been invited to participate in #HouseOfCode on April 11 through 13, 2018, in Washington, D.C., bringing further recognition and celebration to the City of Jackson and the State of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend and congratulate exceptional academic talent and hard work demonstrated by the youth of our state, such as the JPS Career Development Center students and their instructor Miss Wallace, who have brought great honor and recognition to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Jackson Public Schools Career Development Center students Gerald Aldridge, Zion Blount and D'Anthony Thompson, and their instructor Miss Myesha Wallace, upon winning the 2017 Congressional App Challenge, and extend to them best wishes on all their future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Miss Myesha Wallace, Gerald Aldridge, Zion Blount, D'Anthony Thompson and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
