A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND OBSERVE OCTOBER 24, 2017, AS "UNITED NATIONS DAY" AND TO ENCOURAGE THE CITIZENS OF MISSISSIPPI TO COMMEMORATE ITS OBSERVANCE ON OCTOBER 24, 2017.

     WHEREAS, the United Nations was founded in 1945, and the anniversary of the day on which the United Nations Charter came into force is observed on October 24 of each year; and

     WHEREAS, the United Nations promotes peace and security, development, democracy, economic prosperity, global health and human rights around the world, and its role in the global spectrum is extremely vital now more than ever; and

     WHEREAS, the United Nations is determined to eradicate poverty and hunger and ensure that all human beings can fulfill their potential in dignity and equality and in a healthy environment; and

     WHEREAS, the United Nations works to accomplish these goals by achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets of its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by world leaders to cover the three dimensions of sustainable development:  economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection; and

     WHEREAS, the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA) and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., embarked on a new partnership aiming to create global citizens and to foster new audiences to better support the United Nations; and

     WHEREAS, the Beta Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the first graduate chapter chartered in the State of Mississippi, in cooperation with the partnership between the UNA-USA and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is committed to educating Mississippians on the responsibilities of global citizens to eradicate poverty and promote prosperity while protecting our planet; and

     WHEREAS, the people of Mississippi recognize and commend the outstanding service of the United Nations and understand the importance of eradicating poverty and hunger throughout the world while providing humans the dignity, safety and basic rights they deserve and firmly believe that it is fitting and proper that Mississippians commemorate the unparalleled dedication of the United Nations and observe October 24, 2017, as "United Nations Day" in the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby acknowledge and observe October 24, 2017, as "United Nations Day" and encourage the citizens of Mississippi to commemorate its observance on October 24, 2017.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the United Nations Association of the United States of America, the Beta Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the Governor of Mississippi, the Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Mississippi, the Secretary of State of Mississippi and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
