A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE HARTFIELD ACADEMY "HAWKS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH STEVEN MAKAMSON FOR WINNING THE 2017 MAIS CLASS AAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, led by Seniors Frank Miskelly, Dustin Qualls, Jerrian Young and Jacquez Ollie, the Hartfield Academy "Hawks" Boys Basketball Team completed an incredible year, winning the 2017 MAIS Class AAA State Championship. The Hawks completed the year with a 37-5 record and were AAA-District 3, AAA North and AAA State Champions. They gave MRA a tough test in the MAIS Overall Championship Game on March 11, 2017, in Clinton and finished runner-up to a much more experienced team 73-42; and
WHEREAS, in the AAA State Tournament Championship Game on February 25, 2017, after securing a one-point lead at the end of the quarter, the Hawks used a 15-8 run in the second quarter to create some space that the Brookhaven Academy Cougars just could not overcome. The Cougars fell to the senior-filled Hartfield Hawks by a score of 44-27; and
WHEREAS, additional highlights of the 2016-2017 Hawks' season are:
· Defeated Simpson Academy 51-50 in Semifinals to reach AAA Finals, which they won.
· Advanced to MAIS Overall Tournament where they defeated Sylva-Bay Academy, Parklane Academy, Jackson Academy and losing in the finals to Madison-Ridgeland Academy.
· Dustin Qualls scored 24 points, including five 3-Pointers in the AAA Championship. Jerrian Young had 11 points and Franklin Miskelly had 10 assists.
· It was the first major Sport Championship in Hartfield's history; and
WHEREAS, Hartfield in Flowood, Mississippi, joined the league in 2016 and is coached by Head Coach Steven Makamson and Assistant Coach Benton Ingram. Hartfield Academy is fully accredited by both the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS), the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS); and
WHEREAS, Frank Miskelly played in the MAIS All-Star game on March 10, 2017, and the 2017 Hartfield Academy "Hawks" Boys Basketball Team Championship roster is: Anderson Crechale, Brandon Gardner, Conner Husman, Dennis Martin, Drew Willis, Dustin Qualls, Franklin Miskelly, Jacquez Ollie, Jake Edwards, Jerrian Young, Josh Murphy, Matt Sykes, Nick Blakely, Ridge Penn, Shane Wingate, Spence Drake, Thomas Savell and Trey Clark; and Head Coach Steven Makamson; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Hartfield Academy "Hawks" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Steven Makamson for winning the 2017 MAIS Class AAA State Championship, and we extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Makamson and Headmaster David Horner for the team, forwarded to the Board of Trustees of Hartfield Academy, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
