A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE THE COAHOMA COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL "RED PANTHERS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH DERRICK MOORE FOR WINNING THE MHSAA CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, after an 11-year championship drought, the Coahoma County High School "Red Panthers" Boys Basketball Team led by Head Coach Derrick Moore, Sr., defeated Baldwyn High School 60-47 to win the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 2A State Championship on March 10, 2017, and return the Gold Ball Trophy to Clarksdale; and
WHEREAS, eleven is the magic number for the Red Panthers: Coach Derrick Moore is 11 years older than his younger brother, Assistant Coach Daryl Moore who is 11 years older than Derrick Moore Jr., who plays for the Red Panthers, and the last championship for Coahoma County was 11 years ago when they defeated the same Baldwyn team; and
WHEREAS, in the Championship Game, Coahoma's third-quarter run was ignited by senior Brandon Hornburgr who had six of their 10 points to start the half. The pressure was kept up by Player of the Game, number 11 Keon Cosby. Cosby finished the game with 19 points and three rebounds. After the fourth quarter comeback, they ended an 11-year championship drought. For the Moore family, that number has been a topic of conversation all season long; and
WHEREAS, the Coahoma County High School "Red Panthers" Boys Basketball Team Championship Roster is: Timarcus Sacks, PG, SG; Jaylin McCray, SG, PG; Derrick Moore, Jr., SF; Timothy Sack, G; Bentavious Galmore, PG; Brandon Hornburgr, C; Keion Cosby, PF, SG, SF; Markevious Holmes, G; Waltavious Cockenham, SF, SG; Markivus Phillps, PG, SG; Alshun Ross, SF, W; Jermaine Fry, W; Tykeevious Taylor, PF; Effernee Taylor, C; Keyshawn Thomas, G; Gregg Johnson, W; and Dewayne Rucker, SF; Head Coach Derrick Moore; Assistant Coaches: Daryl Moore, Timothy Williams and Myron Lott; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Coahoma County High School "Red Panthers" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Derrick Moore for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 2A State Championship, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Derrick Moore and Coahoma Principal Olenza McBride, forwarded to the Coahoma County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
