A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS AND COMMENDING THE SERVICE OF EMT MICHAEL COLLUMS OF CHICKASAW COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, WHO WAS LOST IN THE LINE OF DUTY, EXTENDING THE CONDOLENCES OF THE LEGISLATURE TO HIS BEREAVED FAMILY, FRIENDS AND CONGREGATION.
WHEREAS, Mike was a responsible citizen and dedicated employee of Orman's Welding and was an Emergency Medical Technician for Medstat Ambulance Service serving the citizens of Chickasaw County; and
WHEREAS, Mike's two greatest passions in life were his grandsons and his work serving his community as an Emergency Medical Technician; and
WHEREAS, Mike Collums became a Certified Emergency Medical Technician more than 22 years ago; and
WHEREAS, on February 21, 2017, Mike and his partner, Raymond Reed, answered the call of a fellow citizen in distress by responding to an emergency in their ambulance, as they had done countless times before. While en route to the scene of that emergency, their ambulance was involved in a traffic accident that took the life of Mike and seriously injured his partner, Raymond; and
WHEREAS, Michael Collums was an upstanding citizen of West Point, Mississippi, a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather. Mike and his wife, Gwen, were members of Vibrant Church in Columbus, Mississippi. Mike leaves behind his wife, Gwen; three sons: Brad, David and Ray; two grandchildren, Chandler and Payton; as well as an extended family, friends, professional colleagues, and a loving congregation; and
WHEREAS, we can never repay our debt to these first responders and their families, but we must do what we can with all that we have to live our lives in a way that pays tribute to their memory. We should not pause and remember to thank first responders only in the wake of tragedy, we should do it every day:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss and commend the service of EMT Michael Collums of Chickasaw County, Mississippi, who was lost in the line of duty, and extend the condolences of the Legislature to his bereaved family, friends and congregation.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the family of Michael Collums and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
