Senate Concurrent Resolution 617

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE FLORENCE HIGH SCHOOL "EAGLES" BOYS SOCCER TEAM AND COACH JOSHUA CAVANAUGH FOR WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, the Florence High School "Eagles" Boys Soccer Team led by Coach Joshua Cavanaugh defeated Bay High School to win the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A State Championship on Classic Weekend, February 3-4, 2017. Bay High School defeated Florence in November, but with a total team effort and some standout play from key positions on the field, the Eagles managed draw level at 1-1 at the end of regulation, overtime and "Golden Goal" overtime due to Chasten Lamb's goal off a Steven Watts assist in the 19th minute. Florence won the Mississippi High School Activities Association 4A State Championship Game 3-2 in a penalty kick shoot-out with two tremendous saves from Logan Helms and penalty kicks made by Baylor Little, Bailey Mickle and Tanner Brunson; and

WHEREAS, the Eagles finished the season 14-9-1. Florence outscored this season 70 goals for vs 39 goals against, both marked improvements over last season with three fewer games due to weather cancelations. It can not be said enough that this season was a total team effort. Florence's leading goal scorer was freshman Tristan Watkins with 12 goals, followed by seniors Jacob Gilmore and Steven Watts with 11 goals. To emphasize unselfish play, they had five players with five or more assists this season. Baylor Little, Chasten Lamb, and Bailey Mickle had six, while Steven Watts and Jacob Gilmore both had five. Once these boys knew what they were playing for, they became the team that would fight to the very end and made their names known as the 2017 Mississippi High School Activities Association 4A Boys State Champions; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize these student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Florence High School "Eagles" Boys Soccer Team and Coach Joshua Cavanaugh, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents, and sponsors for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Cavanaugh for the team, Florence Principal Tony Martin, forwarded to the Rankin County School Board, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
