A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION PAYING TRIBUTE TO THE MEMORY OF FORMER MISSISSIPPI REPRESENTATIVE "BROTHER" ROY ANDREW DABBS OF MERIDIAN, MISSISSIPPI, AND EXTENDING THE CONDOLENCES OF THE LEGISLATURE TO HIS BEREAVED FAMILY.

     WHEREAS, Brother Roy Dabbs, a faithful servant of the community and former Mississippi Representative, passed away on October 10, 2016; and

     WHEREAS, Roy was a graduate of Clarkdale High School.  He attended Mississippi State University-Meridian and University of West Alabama, and received an Associate's degree from Meridian Junior College.  Roy worked for Winn Dixie for several years until going to work at Hilltop Boys Home.  He was Director of the Lauderdale County Juvenile Center and served on the Lauderdale County School Board; and

     WHEREAS, he served two terms in the Mississippi House of Representatives and was also a member of the Christian Action Commission for the Mississippi Baptist Convention; and

     WHEREAS, for the past 22 years, Brother Roy faithfully served the Lord as Pastor, five years at Mt. Olive Baptist Church and 16 at Oak Grove Baptist Church; and

     WHEREAS, State Senator Videt Carmichael said "Roy and I had been friends since high school, he was closer than a brother to me.  I sang at his daddy's funeral, and he preached my daddy's funeral, that's how close we were.  Our children grew up together, my son Fredie called him Uncle Roy and his son Drew called me Coach.  With all the stories, I gave him plenty of material for his sermons.  He always had a great attitude, a great smile, and a good story.  The mark he made on his life while on this earth would be something everybody could enjoy and have memories of"; and

     WHEREAS, he is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sandra; son, Drew (Emily) Dabbs; daughter, Kelly (Allen) Carr; eight grandchildren:  Micah Carr, Evangeline Dabbs, Elizabeth Carr, Roy A. "Trey" Dabbs III, Rachel Carr, Annabelle Dabbs, Abigail Carr, and Emma Faith Dabbs; sisters, Patsy (Mike) Kynerd, Brenda (Mike) McLaughlin and Kathryn (Charles) Yokley; brothers, Gene (Betty) Dabbs, Pete (Doris) Dabbs and Hoyle Dabbs; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews; and we pay tribute and cherish fondly the memory of this most public-spirited citizen and Christian Leader of Mississippi who will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known his special wisdom and wit: 

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby pay tribute to the memory of former Mississippi Representative "Brother" Roy Andrew Dabbs of Meridian, Mississippi, and extend the condolences of the Legislature to his bereaved family.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Roy Dabbs, forwarded to the Director of the Hilltop Boys Home, and the Director of the Lauderdale County Juvenile Center, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
