Senate Concurrent Resolution 584

(As Adopted by Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION EXTENDING THE RECOGNITION OF THE MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE TO LUCY RICHARDSON JANOUSH AS RECIPIENT OF THE 2017 GOVERNOR'S ARTS AWARD FOR LEADERSHIP AS AN ARTS PATRON.

WHEREAS, the Governor's Arts Awards Program has announced its 2017 recipients, which includes Lucy Richardson Janoush for Leadership as an Arts Patron; and

WHEREAS, Lucy Richardson Janoush is a visionary leader for her Delta community of Cleveland and for the State of Mississippi.  She has worked for years to ensure the world knows that Mississippi is the birthplace of American music by building the first satellite GRAMMY Museum in her hometown; and

WHEREAS, while Cleveland may not seem like the obvious choice for The Recording Academy's first museum outside of Los

Angeles, Ms. Janoush saw that all the pieces were in place to bring a world-class music museum to the Delta town:  for a state with a relatively small population, Mississippi boasts a disproportionately large number of GRAMMY winners and nominees.  Delta State University's Delta Music Institute is a training ground for musicians, technicians and others pursuing a career in the music business, and cultural tourism programs promoting the Blues and Southern culture are booming in the Mississippi Delta.  Lucy Janoush saw the opportunity for Cleveland and tirelessly pursued the GRAMMY Museum project; and

WHEREAS, she chaired the Board of the Cleveland Music Foundation, helping to raise more than $20 Million to fund the GRAMMY Museum project.  Ms. Janoush took a hands-on approach to overseeing the construction of the building, design of the exhibits and planning of the educational programs.  She assembled volunteers and professional staff to guarantee the success and educational mission of the museum for years to come.  The GRAMMY Museum Mississippi opened on the campus of Delta State University in 2016; and

WHEREAS, long before the idea of a GRAMMY Museum Mississippi was conceived, Lucy Janoush was pursuing economic development projects for the Delta.  She served as a Legislative Assistant to two Mississippi Congressmen and worked with major Delta corporations, the South Delta Planning and Development District and the Cleveland-Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce.  Ms. Janoush, a graduate of Delta State University, was named Alumna of the Year in 2015 for making a huge and lasting impact on her alma mater, the Town of Cleveland, Bolivar County, the Delta region and the State of Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we pay tribute and express appreciation for the contributions of a Mississippi community leader who has made Mississippi a better place and exemplifies the artistic traditions of our great state:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby extend the recognition of the Mississippi Legislature to Lucy Richardson Janoush as recipient of the 2017 Governor's Arts Award for Leadership as an Arts Patron, and extend our congratulations on this auspicious occasion.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Lucy Richardson Janoush as part of the Governor's Arts Awards presentation on Thursday, February 16, 2017, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
