House Resolution 31

A RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING MRS. SHIRLEY ESTES UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT AND COMMENDING HER PUBLIC SERVICE AND PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

     WHEREAS, 2017 marks the occasion of Mrs. Shirley Estes' retirement from her position as an Alderman of the City of Brookhaven, ending her tenure as one of the most prominent voices on the board; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Estes has been a staple of the Brookhaven, Mississippi, community ever since she moved to Brookhaven with her late husband Don Estes in 1971 and started three businesses together, Brookhaven Chemical & Janitorial Supply, Estes Steamway Carpet & Upholstery and Estes Glass, Inc., where she worked side by side with her husband, serving as secretary and treasurer; and

     WHEREAS, as the mother to four children who attended Brookhaven Public Schools, Mrs. Estes was heavily involved in her children's education, serving as the PTA President of four schools during those years; and

     WHEREAS, after she was elected to finish her husband's term, Mrs. Estes was sworn in as Alderman on October 18, 2004, and attended her first board meeting just one day later on October 19; and  

     WHEREAS, as an Alderman, Mrs. Estes served under Mayors Bob Massengill, Les Bumgarner and Joe Cox, and she also served through some of the toughest crises Brookhaven faced, including Hurricane Katrina, when the board would meet daily; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to her service to her community as an Alderman, Mrs. Estes also serves the people of Brookhaven as a member of the Junior Auxiliary, a member of the Board of Trustees for King's Daughters Medical Center, a member of several committees of the Brookhaven Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, a trustee for Brookhaven Beautiful, President of the Brookhaven Camellia Society, President of the Brookhaven Lincoln County Master Gardeners, a member of Mission Mississippi and a member of The Climbers Club; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Estes is also an active member of First United Methodist Church, where she is President of the United Methodist Women, Chair of the Council on Ministries, a member of the Administrative Board, a Sunday School Teacher and Chairman of the Kitchen Committee; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend the careers of outstanding public servants, such as Mrs. Estes, whose dedication to her community will be an inspiration for years to come:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mrs. Shirley Estes upon the occasion of her retirement, and extend best wishes for continued success in the lighter years to come.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Shirley Estes, the Brookhaven Board of Aldermen and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
