House Bill 972

AN ACT TO CREATE NEW SECTION 3-3-61, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO DESIGNATE "MISSISSIPPI" BY ED THOMAS, AS THE OFFICIAL STATE SONG OF MISSISSIPPI; TO REPEAL CHAPTER 654, LAWS OF 1962, WHICH DESIGNATED "GO MISSISSIPPI" AS THE OFFICIAL STATE SONG; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  The following shall be codified as Section 3-3-61, Mississippi Code of 1972:

     3-3-61.  The lyrics and music in the song entitled "Mississippi" by Ed Thomas, are designated as the official state song of the State of Mississippi.  The lyrics of the song are:

Come with me to Mississippi,

That's where I long to be,

Moon is shining bright,

on God's children tonight.

Bringing happiness,

making living just right!

Come with me to Mississippi,

That's where I long to be.

It's a great place,

better make haste.

People there say,

You can't find a better place.

Come along with me, to Mississippi.

     SECTION 2.  Chapter 654, Laws of 1962, which designated "Go Mississippi" as the official song of the State of Mississippi, is repealed.

     SECTION 3.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2017.
