A RESOLUTION TO COMMEND SENATOR MELANIE SOJOURNER FOR HER DISTINGUISHED SERVICE IN THE MISSISSIPPI SENATE.

     WHEREAS, Senator Melanie Sojourner has represented Senate District 37, which includes Adams, Amite, Franklin and Pike Counties, for four years.  In Melanie Sojourner, the citizens of Natchez, Mississippi, and District 37 have had effective representation from a dedicated public servant with business and ranching experience and many years of civic involvement; and

     WHEREAS, she was elected in 2011 and served from 2012-2015.  Senator Sojourner represented strong Christian and conservative values.  She served on the following committees:  Forestry, Chair; Agriculture, Appropriations, Congressional Redistricting, County Affairs; Energy, Environmental Protection, Conservation and Water Resources; Legislative Reappointment; Municipalities, Public Health and Welfare and Tourism; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Sojourners' key legislative interests have included:  Landowner issues and property rights, farm issues, and authored the landmark bill to eliminate the waiting period for marriage licenses, thereby enhancing tourism options in her home district; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Sojourner has two children; Kaelin Daye and Dayne Daye; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Sojourners' service has been marked by her commitment to success and recognized leadership, sound judgment, civility, courtesy and fairness.  She has set the highest standard in all of her many roles:  mother, community leader and leader in the Mississippi Senate, and as a true friend.  Melanie's service honored both the Mississippi Senate and this great state that she loved and served:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and recognize Senator Melanie Sojourner, whose outstanding service enriched everyone with whom she was associated, and we wish Melanie and her family much success in her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Senator Melanie Sojourner and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
