A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING DR. MICHAEL HENDERSON, CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI MEDICAL CENTER, AS ONE OF THE NATION'S "100 HOSPITAL AND HEALTH SYSTEM CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICERS TO KNOW."

     WHEREAS, Dr. Michael Henderson, an international authority on health care quality improvement, has been recognized as one of the nation's "100 Hospital and Health System Chief Medical Officers to Know" by Becker's Hospital Review, a source of cutting-edge business and legal information for health care industry leaders; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Henderson was named Chief Medical Officer at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in March of 2015, coming from the Cleveland Clinic, where he served as Chief Quality Officer; and

     WHEREAS, the Chief Medical Officers singled out for recognition "exhibit dedication to clinical leadership and have contributed to establishing standards of excellence at their respective organizations."  Leaders were nominated by their peers from among the nation's 5,000 hospitals and selected through an editorial review process; and

     WHEREAS, trained as a hepatobiliary transplant surgeon, Dr. Henderson has put into place a team in the CMO's office that is making strides in promoting transparency and combating the perennial challenge of reducing patient harm.  Using a dyad model of physician leaders paired with UMMC administrative experts in their fields, Dr. Henderson has developed an overall plan to close performance gaps and has set the bar for decreasing infections, lowering mortality rates, enhancing the patient experience, and reducing readmissions; and

     WHEREAS, at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Henderson served as Chairman of the Quality and Patient Safety Institute and was Chair and Professor of General Surgery before beginning his current appointment.  A native of Edinburgh, Scotland, Dr. Henderson earned Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees from the University of St. Andrew's School of Medicine and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.  He served as Chair of the Advisory Committee on National Surgical Quality Improvement as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Henderson served as a global expert for the development of the World Health Organization's Leaders Guide on Patient Safety and Quality of Care in Service Delivery.  He served on the Advisory Board for Robust Performance Improvement for the Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare; and

     WHEREAS, during his 14 years at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Dr. Henderson established the Liver Transplant Program.  After arriving at the Cleveland Clinic, he established a transplant center to oversee all clinical transplant programs; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we join the medical community in honoring a colleague who has brought positive recognition to our state's flagship medical center:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize Dr. Michael Henderson, Chief Medical Officer at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, as one of the nation's "100 Hospital and Health System Chief Medical Officers to Know," by Becker's Hospital Review, and extend to Dr. Henderson and his family our best wishes for continued success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Dr. Michael Henderson, forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
