Senate Concurrent Resolution 605

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE EDUCATION CAREER AND CIVIC LEADERSHIP OF NORTHEAST MISSISSIPPI COMMUNITY COLLEGE PAST PRESIDENT DR. JOHNNY L. ALLEN ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.

     WHEREAS, the educational and administrative career of Dr. Johnny L. Allen, Ed.D, Past President of Northeast Mississippi Community College, is a wonderful example for public servants and professional educators; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Allen's outstanding career is a matter of record:

     ·  Agricultural Education Teacher, Alcorn Central High School, 1978-1982;

     ·  Instructor of Agriculture and Natural Science, Northeast Mississippi Community College, 1982-1990;

     ·  Dean of Instruction and Vocational-Technical Director, 1990-2003;

     ·  Vice President of Instruction and Student Services, 2003-2004;

     ·  President of NEMCC, 2004-2015;

     ·  Served on University of Mississippi School of Education Advisory Council, 7 years;

     ·  Chaired General Education Evaluation Team at Columbia State Community College, Tennessee, 1996;

     ·  Life member of Northeast Mississippi Community College Alumni Association;

     ·  Member of the Board of Directors, North Mississippi Educational Consortium, 2004-2015;

     ·  Member of the Board of Directors, Southern Association of Community, Junior and Technical Colleges, 2007-2015;

     ·  Mississippi Department of Education; State Curriculum Development Team for Comprehensive Secondary Agricultural Education Curriculum (member), 1997-1998;

     ·  Coordinated the development of a long-range facilities plan for Northeast Mississippi Community College, 1999;

     ·  Phi Theta Kappa Certified Leadership Trainer, 1995-2015;

     ·  Initiated the President's Scholar and Dean's Scholar Recognition Program for graduates of Northeast Mississippi Community College, 1991;

     ·  Coordinator of the Health Science Building Planning Committee, 1999; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Allen's legacy of civic and community activities include:

     ·  Alcorn United Way Board of Directors, 2005-2015;

     ·  Rotary International, Booneville, Mississippi, Board of Directors; Secretary, 1993-1995; Vice President, 1995-1997; and President, 1997-1998; Paul Harris Fellow, 2005;

     ·  Board of Directors, Yocona Council of Boy Scouts of America, 2004-2013;

     ·  Member of Commission on Future of Northeast Mississippi, 2004-2015;

     ·  CREATE Foundation Board of Directors, 2004-2015; and

     WHEREAS, his family is well-known to Northeast Mississippi.  He has been married to Christi Cartwright Allen for 38 years, and they have two children:  Jessica, a Bachelor and Master's graduate of the University of Mississippi and current Science Teacher at Thrasher High School in Prentiss County; and John, Jr., a graduate of Northeast Mississippi Community College and graduate of Mississippi State University and current Agricultural Education Teacher at Jumpertown High School in Prentiss County, Mississippi; one grandchild, Laura Kate Morris, who will be two years old in March; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we pay tribute to a most public-spirited citizen of Mississippi who served as a mentor to many students and colleagues:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize the educational career and civic leadership of Northeast Mississippi Community College Past President Dr. Johnny L. Allen on the occasion of his retirement, and extend the best wishes of the Legislature to Dr. Allen and his family on this auspicious occasion.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Dr. Allen, forwarded to the Board of Trustees of Northeast Mississippi Community College and the Mississippi Community College Commission, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
