A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING THE ALCORN STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF EDUCATION AND PSYCHOLOGY FOR MEETING THE NEW COUNCIL FOR THE ACCREDITATION OF EDUCATOR PREPARATION (CAEP) ACCREDITATION STANDARDS.

     WHEREAS, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) was founded as a nonprofit, nongovernmental accrediting body for teacher preparation programs in 1954; and

     WHEREAS, the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC), dedicated to improving academic degree programs for professional educators who teach and lead in schools Pre-K through Grade 12, was founded in 1997; and

     WHEREAS, the Boards of NCATE and TEAC accepted the formation of a new accrediting body, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), in 2010; and

     WHEREAS, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) Commission on Standards and Performance Reporting convened in 2012 to develop the next generation of accreditation standards and performance measures for educator preparation; and

     WHEREAS, CAEP created these standards to ensure educator preparation providers impart future teachers with the knowledge and skills to support the development of all students; and

     WHEREAS, in 2013 CAEP became fully operational as the sole accrediting body for educator preparation providers; and

     WHEREAS, CAEP accreditation standards were fully implemented; NCATE and TEAC legacy standards are no longer used for accreditation in 2016; and

     WHEREAS, Alcorn State University School of Education and Psychology met the new rigorous professional standards for the preparation of teachers and other school specialists on October 27, 2015, becoming nationally accredited by CAEP; and

     WHEREAS, Alcorn State University School of Education and Psychology is pioneer in leading the way by becoming the first of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in the nation and the first institution of higher learning (IHL) in the State of Mississippi to achieve this accreditation; and this achievement was made possible by the collaborative efforts of administrators, colleagues, community, students and supporters:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and congratulate the Alcorn State University School of Education and Psychology for meeting the new Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) accreditation standards, and extend the best wishes of the Legislature to the administrators, instructors and students on this achievement.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the President of Alcorn State University and the Dean of the College of Education, forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
