A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS AND COMMEMORATING THE LIFE, LEGACY AND SERVICE OF MR. HUNTER GEORGE "H.G." WEDDINGTON AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.
WHEREAS, "To everything there is a season, and time to every purpose," and as such, the State of Mississippi and the Meridian, Mississippi, community lost a wonderful friend and life-long resident with the passing of Hunter George "H.G." Weddington, on January 13, 2016, rendering great sorrow to those fortunate enough to know his gentle and caring soul; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Weddington was born on April 18, 1917, and after graduating from Meridian High School, Mr. Weddington attended the University of Mississippi from 1935 through 1937, and Yale University from 1942 through 1943; and
WHEREAS, although Mr. Weddington left his mark on this world in many different facets of life, it is his golfing career that he will be most remembered for, second only to being a loving and caring family man; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Weddington began his golfing career at the University of Mississippi, where he became one of the most prolific amateur golfers in Mississippi history, never losing a single match while playing for the Rebels; and
WHEREAS, throughout his storied career, Mr. Weddington amassed 83 tournament championships, whose numbers include winning the Mississippi Men's State Amateur Championship several times, and recording a number of club titles at his home course of Northwood Country Club; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his championship titles, Mr. Weddington also recorded an impressive 30 holes-in-one, a true testament to his proficient play as a master of the game; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Weddington passed down his talent and love for the game of golf to his daughter, Lou, and the two are the only father-daughter duo to be inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in Mississippi history; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Weddington's golfing success mirrored his business success, as he took over his father's business, General Supply and Machine, in 1986, and along with his son Alex, transformed the business into a wholesale distributor for HVAC, mill supplies, plumbing supplies, pumps, valves and pipe fittings with customers all across the southeastern United States; and
WHEREAS, a faithful community servant, Mr. Weddington was a Paul Harris Fellow, former president of the Meridian Rotary Club and the Northwood Country Club, president of the Mississippi Golf Association and the Meridian Chamber of Commerce, served on the boards of the Merchants and Farmers Bank, Deposit Guaranty, Choctaw Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, United Way and the Salvation Army, and was a faithful member and deacon of Meridian First Presbyterian Church; and
WHEREAS, while Mr. Weddington will always be remembered as a golfer, his service to his country during World War II as a member of the Army Air Corps, from which he ultimately retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, will solidify his legacy in the history books as an honorable American and patriot; and
WHEREAS, although the physical presence of Mr. Weddington has left this earth, his spiritual presence will join his loving wife, June Alexander, and delight in Heaven's grandeur, while the legacy of Mr. Weddington's memory will be cherished by his beloved survivors: children, Alex and Lou; granddaughter, Bailey; niece, Claire Hans; and a host of other relatives and friends; and
WHEREAS, it the policy of this Legislature to acknowledge the selfless and honorable character of such a great individual as that of Mr. Weddington, who will be sorely missed by every person who knew him:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss and commemorate the life, legacy and service of Mr. Hunter George "H.G." Weddington, and express deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mr. Hunter George "H.G." Weddington and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
