A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE STARKVILLE HIGH SCHOOL "YELLOW JACKETS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH GREG CARTER FOR WINNING THE CLASS 6A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, Starkville High School Boys Basketball Team's first trip back to the Mississippi Coliseum in five years ended in a 43-40 overtime victory against Madison Central, earning the Yellow Jackets its first State Championship since 2010; and

     WHEREAS, eleven days of madness culminated in storybook-like fashion.  A Championship Game forced into overtime, determined by free throws and potential buzzer-beating jump shots.  Two teams that met four times this year, capping off the 2014-2015 season in one of the most electric games of the MHSAA State Basketball Tournament; and

     WHEREAS, "With this kind of game, they know us better than anybody else.  We knew them better than anybody else," Coach Greg Carter said.  "We expected it to be a hard-fought game."  Starkville won the last two meetings by double figures.  On March 14, 2015, it was much closer; and

     WHEREAS, entering the final period, Madison Central had a 24-22 advantage.  The Yellow Jackets eyed a comeback.  The Jaguars' Leroy Buchanan hit a jumper with about a minute left in regulation to force overtime at 34-34.  The game would come down to the two principles Starkville wore on the back of their warm-up T-shirts, defense and rebounds.  In overtime, Starkville grabbed the defensive boards and made 7 of 12 foul shots.  Keith Harris' free throw gave Starkville a 43-40 lead, which they would not relinquish; and

     WHEREAS, the key player was Tyson Carter.  The junior guard's 14 points and six rebounds helped edge the Yellow Jackets in the fourth quarter; and

     WHEREAS, the 2014-2015 Starkville High School "Yellow Jackets" Boys Basketball Roster is:  JT King, Darrius Wilson, Nick Deloach, Raphael Leonard, Tyson Carter, Nakiren Ratliff, Keith Harris, Tavien Brownlee, Markedric Bell, Jarquez McCarter, Jamal Williams, Josh Skinner, Jessie Little and Darrious Agnew; and Coach Greg Carter; and

     WHEREAS, it is with pride that we recognize this team of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Starkville High School "Yellow Jackets" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Greg Carter for winning the Class 6A State Championship, and we extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Carter and Starkville Principal David Baggett, forwarded to the Starkville Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
