Senate Concurrent Resolution 627

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE VELMA JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL "FALCONS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH ANTHONY CARLYLE FOR WINNING THEIR THIRD STRAIGHT (3-PEAT) CLASS 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, Quinndary Weatherspoon turned to look at the scorer's table for three straight whistles.  One by one, Velma Jackson's seniors checked out of a game for the final time while wearing Falcons across their chests.  The fourth whistle prompted Weatherspoon's exit before Velma Jackson went on to beat Aberdeen 76-38 in the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 3A Boys Championship on March 13, 2015.  Fans wearing blue and yellow inside the Mississippi Coliseum rose to their feet and applauded; and

WHEREAS, for Weatherspoon and his fellow seniors, Kendarius Smith, Moses Greenwood and Anfernee Brown, the victory marked their third straight title.  Not bad for a group of freshmen who lost their first high school playoff game; and

WHEREAS, Witherspoon scored a game-high 28 points, to go along with nine assists and five rebounds, en route to being named the game's MVP.  He made 12 of 17 shots from the field, including two of three from beyond the arc.  The Mississippi State signee scored 12 points in the first eight minutes, propelling Velma Jackson to a 20-6 lead after one quarter; and

WHEREAS, "They just had a passion from day one when I got them," Jackson Coach Anthony Carlyle said.  "They came in and were willing to learn.  They wanted to be champions"; and

WHEREAS, the Velma Jackson High School "Falcons" Boys Basketball Roster is:  Robert Anderson, Kendarius Smith, Quinndary Weatherspoon, Shelvie Brooks, Rayshun Jackson, Travius Brown, Moses Greenwood, Nikolas Weatherspoon, Arthur Eldridge, Anfernee Brown, Nicholas Rivers, Jamuel Brooks, Janaurius Porter and Antwain Dixon; and Coach Anthony Carlyle; and

WHEREAS, it is with pride that we recognize this team of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the state of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Velma Jackson High School "Falcons" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Anthony Carlyle for winning their third straight Class 3A State Championship, and we extend our best wishes to the team, coaches and parents for a 4-peat.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Anthony Carlyle and Velma Jackson Principal Bertram Goodloe, forwarded to Madison County Board of Education and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
