Senate Concurrent Resolution 625

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE CALLAWAY HIGH SCHOOL "CHARGERS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH DAVID SANDERS FOR WINNING THEIR 4-PEAT CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND SIXTH CHAMPIONSHIP IN SEVEN YEARS.

WHEREAS, Malik Newman scored a game-high 27 points and six assists as the Callaway High School "Chargers" Boys Basketball Team rolled past Ridgeland 66-43 to claim the MHSAA Class 5A Boys State Championship at the Mississippi Coliseum on March 13, 2015, in front of an estimated crowd of 6,800; and

WHEREAS, the win clinched Callaway's fourth consecutive State Championship and sixth in the last seven years.  It was Calloway's 7th Overall Title, and secured Callaway's recent run among the best-ever in basketball-crazy Jackson.  Callaway became the first Jackson Public School Team to win four consecutive State Championships; and

WHEREAS, in his four years at Callaway Malik Newman left little to improve upon his legacy.  The Chargers have retired his number.  The notoriety led to a website, nickname and a logo.  He waited until the fourth quarter for his encore performance at the Mississippi Coliseum.  Newman broke through in the fourth, ending a game that saw six lead changes in the first half.  He opened the quarter with eight straight points.  His second three of the quarter pushed the Chargers' lead to 16.  It grew to 22 with three minutes remaining when Decardo Day threw down an alley-oop from Newman.  A minute later, Newman's high school career came to a close as he walked to the bench with this team up 24.  He led all scorers with 27 points and six assists.  He also grabbed six rebounds.  Dimencio Vaughn was the only Charger who had more rebounds with seven.  Vaughn and Wesley Harris joined Newman as the only Callaway players in double figures.  After the final buzzer, he was named the game's MVP; and

WHEREAS, the title is the second under second-year Coach David Sanders, who replaced Wayne Brent when he left for Jackson State; and

WHEREAS, the 2014-2015 Callaway "Chargers" Boys Basketball Team Roster is as follows:  Marcus Summerville, Tanorrio Ransburgh, Decardo Day, Kassim Nicholson, Jamal Bolden, Quay Kennard, Malik Newman, Dimencio Vaughn, Damien Moore, Wesley Harris, Javious Bardney, Jvari Thigpen and Tommy Champion; Head Coach David Sanders; Assistant Coaches Trent Hysten and Joshua Harvey; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this special achievement by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Callaway High School "Chargers" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach David Sanders for winning their fourth straight Class 5A State Championship and sixth in seven years, and extend our best wishes to the players, coaches, parents and sponsors for continued success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach David Sanders and Principal William Trammell III for the team, forwarded to the Jackson Public School Board, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
