A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 2014 LAUREL HIGH SCHOOL "GOLDEN TORNADOES" FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH TODD BRELAND FOR WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, the Laurel High School "Golden Tornadoes" Football Team clinched a 29-26 victory in an epic battle against the top-ranked Oxford High School Chargers, a team that has a 12-game winning streak, in a game that had fans on the edge of their seats until the last down was played in Davis Wade Stadium at Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, the Tornadoes had an outstanding season with a 12-2 record and claimed their third Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A State Championship; and
WHEREAS, the Tornadoes never trailed in the State Championship Game, and smart play-making in the last seconds of the matchup helped the Tornadoes seal their season with a State Championship; and
WHEREAS, "I couldn't be prouder of this team," Laurel Head Coach Todd Breland said minutes after the final whistle sounded. "I told our players at the start of the fourth quarter that you have about 20 plays left in your high school career, don't leave anything and go after it"; and
WHEREAS, the 2014 Laurel High School Golden Tornadoes Boys Football Roster is as follows: Jonathan Atencio, Keon Howard, Kayln McGee, Jamari Campbell, Dontario Drummond, Kobe Drummer, Omar Bayless, Malik Terrell, Kelvin Rogers, Shemar Keyes, Ricky Holden, Kedarrius Arrington, Tiberious Ellis, Jaylus Martin, Anthony Jones, Jevah Jones, Octavious Cooley, Henry Shade, Daveon Rogers, Jalon Thigpen, Terrence Evans, Dante Robinson, Thakarius Keyes, Joseph Montes, Javin Arrington, Michael Harris, Yorch Atencio, Zadranod Rhodes, Kolby Smith, Mario Rogers, Zaquavious Hayes, Darius Townsend, Lanceston Evans, Anthony Brown, Josh Townsend, Kenny Jones, Jonathan Gonzales, Malik Davis, Keontae Jones, Kalen Brown, Daniel Magee, Tyrek Thigpen, Ijerious Nixon, Landyon Brown, Keelyn Brown, Demant Walker, Ledarius Cooper, Adrian Lindsey, Phillip Weathersby, Chris Pridgen, Darrius Porter, Danthony Page, James Cooley, Malik Cooley, Mitchell Cross, Covarsia Bester, Robert Jones, Michael Gibson, Antonio Kirk, Byron Bailey, Malik King, Jamarcus Smith, Gervarius Windham, BJ Windham, Lawrence Collins, Shaquan Thorns, Kadarius Kennedy, Vincent McGill, Jaquaveon Watson, Brindon Manuel, Dayquan Killings, Sydney Daniels, Dezavion Conner, Durriel Breland, Kendall Breland, Tyrese Sims, Tahj Meadows, Jamarcus Strong, Shatwoine Thames, Emmanuel Lindsey, Nick Newell, Jordan Barrett and Sam Lovett; and
WHEREAS, the Assistant Coaches who helped the players reach their fullest potential on and off the field are: Ronnie Cochran, Buddy Duke, Jerry Fletcher, Cecil Hicks, Tracy Lampley, Ryan Milner, Mason Moss and Ray Pickering; and
WHEREAS, other supporters and assistants who played a huge role in the success of the Tornadoes Football Team are as follows: Principal Carl Day; Athletic Director Milton Smith; Assistant Athletic Director Jeff Davis; Superintendent Dr. Chuck Beningo; Assistant Superintendent Dr. John Harper, and the Managers: Bryce Harper, Deuce Jackson, Lajuan Jones, German Price, Paul Page and James Pruitt; and
WHEREAS, the Tornadoes have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Todd Breland, who has broadened the Tornadoes' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize and honor the achievements of the student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community, and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Laurel High School "Golden" Tornadoes Football Team and Head Coach Todd Breland for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A State Championship, their third State Title, and extend best wishes to the team and coaches for continued success in all of their future athletic and academic endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Head Coach Todd Breland, forwarded to Laurel High School Principal Carl Day and the Jones County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
