A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS OF MDOT MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN HENRY BUTLER, JR., OF GUNNISON, MISSISSIPPI, WHO LOST HIS LIFE IN THE LINE OF DUTY, AND EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE LEGISLATURE.
WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi lost a member of the Mississippi Department of Transportation family on Tuesday, June 3, 2014. Henry Butler, a Maintenance Technician in District 3, lost his life while on duty in Bolivar County. Henry worked out of the Cleveland Office and was providing work zone protection for his coworkers with a truck-mounted attenuator when his vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler. There is no doubt that Henry doing his job is what prevented more people from being killed or severely injured; and
WHEREAS, words are not enough to express the magnitude of this loss felt by his family, friends and coworkers. Our frontline workers put their lives in the hands of the traveling public every day to keep our transportation system safe; and
WHEREAS, Henry is survived by his wife, Deloris, and their three children: Henry Butler III, who turned 30 the day of his Father's passing; Kevin Jones, 24; and Ciara Butler, 16; and
WHEREAS, we can never repay our debt to these Mississippi public servants whose dangerous work ensures the safety of citizens who travel the highways of our state. We must do what we can, with all that we have, to live our lives in a way that pays tribute to their memory. We should not pause and remember to thank road crew technicians only in the wake of tragedy, we should do it every day:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That that we do hereby mourn the loss of MDOT Maintenance Technician Henry Butler of Gunnison, Mississippi, and express the sympathy of the Legislature.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Henry Butler, forwarded to the Mississippi Transportation Commission, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
