A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE PASSING AND COMMENDING THE PUBLIC SERVICE OF FORMER STATE SENATOR JOE MULHOLLAND OF NESHOBA COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, AND EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE LEGISLATURE.
WHEREAS, the Legislature and the State of Mississippi lost a friend, colleague, and effective lawmaker with the death of former State Senator Joe Mulholland, 80, on October 14, 2014, in his home county of Neshoba; and
WHEREAS, Senator Mulholland served three terms in the Mississippi Senate (1964-1968, 1976-1980, and 1980-1984). Senator Mulholland served as Chairman of the Public Property Committee and Vice Chairman of the Senate Fees and Salaries Committee. He was particularly active on the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee where he participated in a Subcommittee which conducted a detailed study of the state Charity Hospital system which was recommended for transition into the Medicaid program; and
WHEREAS, he was born and reared in Neshoba County where he made his home all of his life. He had lived in Philadelphia for the past two years. Mr. Mulholland was an attorney and cattleman for many years. While serving in the Mississippi State Senate, he also worked for a number of years at the Bank of Philadelphia and NBC; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Mulholland was a member and Deacon of Mt. Carmel Church of God in Neshoba County; and
WHEREAS, survivors include one niece, Patty Pace (Derek) of Philadelphia, Mississippi; one nephew, Mike Calvert of Philadelphia, Mississippi; and two special great-nephews, Benjamin Pace and Brian Pace. Mr. Mulholland was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Gladys Mulholland, and his sister, Winnie "Sis" Calvert; and
WHEREAS, Senator Mulholland excelled in a variety of major responsibilities and served the Senate, his constituents and the State of Mississippi exceptionally well. Joe's public service was exemplified by fairness and sound judgment, and he set the highest standard as a leader in the Mississippi Senate and while he has departed this earth, his worldly impact on his many friends and family will never be forgotten:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss and commend the life and legacy of public service of former Senator Joe Mulholland of Neshoba County, Mississippi, and express to his family the sympathy of the Legislature on his passing and our thanks for sharing Joe with us and with the State of Mississippi.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the family of Senator Mulholland and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
