House Resolution 142

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE DISTINGUISHED LEGACY OF PUBLIC SERVICE AND ESTEEMED CAREER OF MRS. BARBARA DUNN AS HINDS COUNTY CIRCUIT CLERK UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT.

WHEREAS, an era in Hinds County politics will come to an end this year at the conclusion of the political term of esteemed and longtime Hinds County Circuit Clerk Barbara Dunn, who leaves behind a legacy of distinguished public service upon the announcement of her retirement from office; and

WHEREAS, known for her folksy, down-home attitude, Circuit Clerk Dunn, who is now 77, was first elected in 1984 and is the longest-serving countywide elected official in Hinds County and the only Caucasian countywide official in office; and

WHEREAS, when elected circuit clerk, Mrs. Dunn was one of an all-White countywide elected government in Hinds County, but her impartial fairness and evidentiary exhibition of equality and inclusiveness of all races proved beneficial to her longevity in office as Hinds County's population shifted to an African-American majority over the years and her ability to maintain support from both the African-American and Caucasian communities; and

WHEREAS, during her last several re-election campaigns, Circuit Clerk Dunn received the endorsement of the Jackson Advocate, an African-American-owned weekly newspaper; and WHEREAS, a lady devout in her faith, Mrs. Dunn has led and continues to lead a life of bravery in the face of challenge, sincerity in the face of apathy and honesty in the presence of deceit and treachery, and looks with great expectancy upon the opportunity to spend time with her husband and a grandchild in Louisiana; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor the legacy of an individual of Mrs. Dunn's elite caliber, who has represented Hinds County and maintained the integrity of the office superbly, and served the people of this great state with utmost honor and integrity:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby honor the legislative legacy of Hinds County Circuit Clerk Barbara Dunn, express gratitude for her years of dedicated service to the people of Hinds County, Mississippi, and congratulate her upon the occasion of her retirement.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Barbara Dunn and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
