A RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF MR. PHILIP (PHIL) ERSKINE IRBY, JR., AND EXPRESSING SYMPATHY UPON HIS PASSING.
WHEREAS, "To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose," and as such, the time on earth for Mr. Philip Erskine Irby, Jr., has passed; and
WHEREAS, born on October 25, 1925, the son of Philip E. Irby and Gertrude Irby, he was educated at St. Joseph and Central High School, Jackson, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, he served in the United States Air Force, and entered Millsaps College, where he graduated with a bachelor of arts in economics in 1949; and
WHEREAS, after college, he was hired as a Special Agent by Prudential Insurance Company in 1952, where he had an active career of service until he retired in 1995; and
WHEREAS, in 1953, he met the love of his life, Mary Helen Pointer, who was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, during his time with Prudential, he rose in the company's ranks and he qualified for most company conferences, where he was frequently a speaker and was recognized in the community for his service to his policyholders and their widows; and
WHEREAS, his passion for insurance, motivated him to become active in the National Association of Life Underwriters, where he taught classes and earned 36 consecutive National Quality Awards; and
WHEREAS, spiritually, he lived an active life within St. Richard Catholic Church, where he served in many capacities and ministries; and
WHEREAS, he will be remembered as a prince of a man, by his loving family and many friends, who recall his enthusiasm for his regular weekly tennis games, which he enjoyed well into his 70s, at River Hills Tennis Club, as well as his yard work, travel and sharing photographs; and
WHEREAS, to cherish his memory, he leaves his sons, Philip, William, Thad and a daughter, Paula Maniscalco; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor the lives of fine Mississippians, whose greatest joys are gained by helping others and being a comfort to those in sorrow:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commemorate the life and legacy of Mr. Philip (Phil) Erskine Irby, Jr., and express sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mr. Philip (Phil) Erskine Irby, Jr., and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
