Senate Concurrent Resolution 626

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE SHAW HIGH SCHOOL "HAWKS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH ANTHONY DAVIS FOR CAPTURING THEIR FIRST 1A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP SINCE 1973.

WHEREAS, Zedic Bass scored a game-high 25 points, JerMarquis Stimage added 19 points, and #1 ranked Shaw High School rolled to a 60-57 victory against Hinds AHS during the Class 1A MHSAA Boys Basketball Title Game on March 13, 2014, at the Mississippi Coliseum; and

WHEREAS, it is the second Championship in program history for the Hawks, whose previous title came in 1973 (40 years ago); and

WHEREAS, the Hawks (26-7) had one loss in their division. Shaw Head Basketball Coach Anthony Davis hoisted the Mississippi Class 1A Basketball Championship Trophy after the Hawks defeated the Hinds AHS. This was the first Championship win in Coach Davis' 15 years at Shaw High; and

WHEREAS, the Hawks were making their second appearance at the Coliseum under Coach Davis, who recharged the program this season after falling in the Class 1A North State Semifinals a year ago. It resulted in a dominating run in which the Hawks' won their last 12 games of the season to capture the Gold Ball. "I want to congratulate Coach Davis and the team on a great season. Coach Davis has given Shaw a number of great years. I am thrilled for the team and for the Coach," said Lamar Franks, Mayor of Shaw; and

WHEREAS, the Shaw High School Boys Basketball Team Championship Roster is: Andre Pruitt, Octavius Stimage, Zedric Bass, Anthony Davis, Jr., JerMarquis Stimage, Lekia McRoy, Fredrick Bryant, Ladarius Buckhanon, Damarcus Gilliam, Deshawn Davis, Malik Walker, DeVontaris Bass, Christopher Freeman, Willie Pegues, Charles Stimage, Justice Clay, Darrol Woods, Martavius Gilliam, and Quandarius Riley; Managers: Jeneldrick Randle, Michael Douglass, and Melvindrick Johnson, Jr.; Statistician Danterrius Ware; Head Coach Anthony Davis; Assistant Coaches, Mevindrick Johnson, Sr., and Dekoshia Dorsey; Athletic Director Derandel Allen; Superintendent Judy Nelson; and Principal L'Kenna Whitehead; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize a dream season by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Shaw High School "Hawks" Boys Basketball Team and Coach Anthony Davis for capturing their first Class 1A State Championship since 1973, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches and parents for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Davis for the team, Shaw High School Principal L'Kenna Whitehead, forwarded to the Shaw School District Board of Trustees, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
