Senate Concurrent Resolution 609

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE HORN LAKE HIGH SCHOOL "LADY EAGLES" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH JANNA THOMPSON FOR A DOMINATING CLASS 6A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, Horn Lake High School "Lady Eagles" Girls Basketball Team won the Class 6A MHSAA Girls Basketball Championship by routing Olive Branch 74-39 on March 15, 2014, at the Mississippi Coliseum; and

     WHEREAS, A'Queen Hayes fouled out in the fourth quarter.  She was cheered on as she made her way down the bench, and then she pointed to the crowd.  Hayes finished with nine points, but she was perfect from the field.  She hit a 3-pointer in the second quarter that spelled the ending of the game, as the Lady Eagles (30-1) went up 35-8 against the team that served them their only loss of the season; and

     WHEREAS, "The work that they put in this year, it's so deserving and they were definitely one of the most talented groups I've ever had," said Horn Lake Coach Janna Thompson, who finished her eight season; and

     WHEREAS, Murray State recruit Olivia Cunningham had a game-high 19 points with nine rebounds and seven assists.  She came with Hayes from Southaven and helped grab the school's second-ever State Title; and

     WHEREAS, the 2013-2014 Girls Basketball Team 6A Championship Roster is:  A'Queen Hayes, Erika Toney, Brayanta Conley, Tranika Echols, Treasure Evans, Shernique Adams, Olivia Cunningham, Alondrea Rush, TaéLour Richardson, Nikole Bell, Alexyse Thomas and Coach Janna Thompson; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Horn Lake High School "Lady Eagles" Girls Basketball Team and Coach Janna Thompson for a dominating Class 6A State Championship, and extend to the players, coaches, parents and sponsors best wishes for future success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Thompson and Principal Andy Orr, forwarded to the DeSoto County Board of Education and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
