A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND USM DIRECTOR OF THE SCHOOL OF ACCOUNTANCY, DR. KIRBY E. "SKIP" HUGHES II, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.

     WHEREAS, Dr. Kirby E. "Skip" Hughes II joined The University of Southern Mississippi on July 1, 2009, as Director of the School of Accountancy; and

     WHEREAS, he was instrumental in leading the reaffirmation of accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) for the School of Accountancy which places the College of Business among the best programs in the world with very few accredited programs also achieving separate accreditation for accounting; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Hughes was instrumental in recruiting high-performing faculty members who also balance the emphasis on teaching and outreach.  His contributions to the School of Accounting include the following: 

     ·  Implemented a course in Excel skills to assist the Master of Public Accounting students achieve certification;

     ·  Supported the accounting honorary, Beta Alpha Psi and its advisor to achieve superior status on a national scale;

     ·  Initiated the Principles of Accounting Competency Exam (PACE) which received a Best Practice Honorable Mention Award for accreditation;

     ·  Energized the Accounting Advisory Board and the placement of students in careers with top companies;

     ·  Exemplary job of teaching cost accounting at the undergraduate level, managerial accounting in the MBA program, and advanced managerial accounting in the MPA program;

     ·  Also published two articles in outlets classified as "A" level journals in the College of Business Journal ranking list in Advances in Accounting, and in Issues in Accounting Education within the past three years; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Hughes contributed to the leadership of the College of Business with service on the Executive Committee, to the progress of the University of Southern Mississippi with service on the Council of Chairs, and to the community through outreach; and

     WHEREAS, the faculty in the School of Accountancy also rate Dr. Hughes as "excellent" in the integrity of his leadership, in the impact he has had on their programs, in his fairness, ability to recruit and overall effectiveness; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we commend this record of achievement and legacy of leadership and dedication to the accounting profession which has brought honor to the University of Southern Mississippi and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby join the faculty and administration of the University of Southern Mississippi in recognizing and commending the Director of the School of Accountancy, Dr. Kirby E. "Skip" Hughes II, on the occasion of his retirement, and extend our best wishes to Dr. Hughes and his family on this auspicious occasion.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Dr. Hughes, forwarded to the President of University of Southern Mississippi and the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
