Senate Concurrent Resolution 593

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE LEWISBURG HIGH SCHOOL "PATRIOTS" BASEBALL TEAM AND COACH RUSTY CAGLE FOR WINNING THEIR FIRST MHSAA CLASS 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, the Lewisburg High School "Patriots" Baseball Team defeated Newton County 7-2 on Thursday, May 30, 2013, to win its first Mississippi High School Activities Association State Championship; and

WHEREAS, through the first two games of their Class 4A Title series against Newton County, the Patriots had scored three runs in 17 innings.  Lewisburg's offense came alive in the third and decisive contest at Pearl's Trustmark Park.  In the bottom of the third inning, the Patriots scored five runs, highlighted by RBI's from Rudy Martin, Hunter Wilson and Mason Givens.  Coupled with another strong effort from Jonathan Lindsey on the mound, Lewisburg had its desired outcome - a 7-2 victory; and

WHEREAS, "We started slow," said Patriot Coach Rusty Cagle, "but in the third inning, we had a strike-'em, throw-'em-out double play.  That got the energy going for us."  There was plenty of vigor left for the celebratory dog pile that culminated a 30-8 season; and

WHEREAS, Lewisburg eliminated Caledonia, Houston and Kosciusko on its way to making its second consecutive appearance at state.  The Patriots were defeated by Purvis in 2012.  The Patriots won the opener 2-0.  The following day, they dropped a 2-1 decision in 10 innings.  Newton County scored the game-winner on a sacrifice fly.  Lewisburg turned to Lindsey (10-2) on short rest for the clincher; and

WHEREAS, leadoff hitters Lowell Haney and Rudy Martin, a Texas Tech commitment, were consistent scoring threats throughout the regular season and playoffs.  It has been a long road for the Patriots and the team was excited to be there; and

WHEREAS, the 2013 Patriots roster is:  Garrett Ainsworth, Cary Allen, Shawn Michael Allen, Travis Argol, Peter Barton, Tanner Booth, Jarrod Bratton, Braxton Brock, Gabe Brown, Cole Brownlee, Koby Busby, Geoff Busby, Cody Cathey, Cody Cooper, Jake Davidson, Talyn Dunn, Benji Galbraith, Mason Givens, Lowell Haney, Alex Hay, Taylor Kuntz, Jonathan Lindsey, Tanner Lloyd, Davis Lott, Trey Martin, Rudy Martin, Micah Nichols, Peyton Plumlee, Nick Pogue, Christian Powers, Austin Rice, Jesse Shelton, Colt Smith, Cooper Stevens, Chris Taylor, Jake Tyrone, Tucker Wammack, Jonas White, Avery White, Hunter Wilson and Juan Worley; and

WHEREAS, it is with pride that we recognize a team of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Lewisburg High School "Patriots" Baseball Team and Coach Rusty Cagle for winning its first MHSAA Class 4A State Championship, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors on this first-time accomplishment.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Cagle and Lewisburg Principal Chris Fleming, forwarded to the DeSoto County Board of Education and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
