Senate Concurrent Resolution 565

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING THE MILLSAPS "MAJORS" FOOTBALL TEAM AND COACH AARON PELCH FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING 2013 SEASON AND THEIR SECOND CONSECUTIVE SOUTHERN ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION (SAA) TITLE.

     WHEREAS, the Millsaps Majors Football Team finished its 2013 season at 9-1, winning the most games since the 11-win 2008 team.  Millsaps also claimed a share of its second straight Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Title and finished the regular season ranked No. 23 in the final regular season D3football.com poll and the final AFCA Coaches' Poll; and

     WHEREAS, Southern Athletic Association's Conference Player of the Year Defensive End Zach Bell had a phenomenal season.  The two-time Southern Athletic Association's Defensive Player of the Year and two-time Second-Team All-Region junior enjoyed his finest season as a Major to date in 2013.  Bell recorded 12 sacks and 19.5 tackles for a loss in 10 games this season.  Zach Bell has also been named a Cliff Harris Award Finalist which honors the small school Defensive Player of the Year.  The award is named for former Dallas Cowboy Cliff Harris who came from a small town in Arkansas to play 10 years for the Dallas Cowboys at safety.  Harris played in five Super Bowls and six Pro Bowls.  This award recognizes defensive excellence at the Division II, Division III and NAIA level; and

     WHEREAS, Millsaps' Majors' running back Mike Barthelemy won the C-Spire Conerly Trophy fan voting, earning 500 votes and 33% of the total ballots.  Barthelemy, the reigning Southern Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Year, rushed for nearly 1400 yards and a school-record 21 rushing touchdowns; and

     WHEREAS, the Conference also named Beau Brady as Special Teams Player of the Year after leading the Conference with 10 successful field goals and scoring a Conference leading 66 points as a place kicker for the Majors.  Additionally, Coach Pelch earned his second consecutive Conference Coach of the Year honors; and

     WHEREAS, the individual player and team statistics of the 2013 Majors was impressive, however the main ingredient of success was team atmosphere and hard work; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we note the accomplishments of this Mississippi team which has brought honor to their college, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and congratulate the Millsaps "Majors" Football Team and Coach Aaron Pelch for their outstanding 2013 season and their second consecutive Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Title, and extend our best wishes to the players, parents, coaches and sponsors for continued success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Pelch and Millsaps President Dr. Robert Pearigen and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
